Harry Taylor: American Hero

Give 'em Hell Harry!

...

"While I listen to you talk about freedom, I see you assert your right to tap my telephone, to arrest me and hold me without charges, to try to preclude me from breathing clean air and drinking clean water and eating safe food. If I were a woman, you'd like to restrict my opportunity to make a choice ... about whether I can abort a pregnancy ... What I wanted to say to you is that--in my lifetime, I have never felt more ashamed of, nor more frightened, by my leadership in Washington, including the presidency. And I would hope from time to time that you have the humility and the grace to be ashamed of youself ... I also want to say I really appreciate the courtesy of allowing me to speak ... That is part of what this country is about."

3. Isn't he something?
At first, I thought he was a ringer, planted in the audience to give the impression that Fuckface is open to all kinds of folks.

But then I realized he was on the level.

And Fuckface smirked and made faces and wisecracks the whole time this gentleman was speaking. I really wanted to slap him.

Actually, I wanted to take a machete to his face, but that's just me.

What a marvelous thing he did, this American man, Harry Taylor - and the saddest part of it all is that we now consider that sort of thing extraordinary.

It should be normal, routine, usual.

I'm Italian-American, too.

If he needed ONE beating, I'd probably have said "He needs a beating."

But, given the Southern idiom that creeps into my language, and the plain fact that Fuckface needs to be beaten for the rest of eternity, I'd say I wrote what I thought.

As I said, I'm Italian.

could play Gracious Lady that time. He had his usual hand-picked audience. But that plain-spoken but eloquent query must have secretly RANKLED, for a long time after. A discussion of Harry Taylor on another DU thread, revealed that he was a respectable businessman, rather than a "damn long-haired hippy".

6. I thought it was so great what he did!
The folks around him seem to have different thoughts about it, based on their reactions. The woman right next to him looks shocked, the woman next to her has an "If looks could kill" expression on her face. The interesting one to me, though, is the woman sitting above those two women. She has her hand over her mouth, saying something to the person next to her. I can't be sure of course, but it seems almost like she having a positive reaction to Mr. Taylor.

Once the image is modified to be satirical, it belongs to the satirist. I can sell McMerde buttons, for example, even although it uses the McD logo in a modified form because the intent of the creation is altered to be satirical.

Anyway, as you noted, in this case the question is moot sinece I'm giving it away :)

The End of Illustration?

by Steve Heller

Norman Rockwell idealized America through his covers for the Saturday Evening Post and America idolized him as the people's artist. Illustration was the people's art. Today, however, painted and drawn illustration–narrative and conceptual–is, in the words of one skeptical design magazine editor, "unnecessary in an era of digital media." So is the illustration discipline really marginalized? Or to paraphrase Charles Dickens: Is this the real skinny or the skinny that might be?

Digital media, and specifically the PhotoShop extension, has had a profound influence on the way that art directors and designers currently view illustration. Once graphic designers depended on the rendering skills and conceptual acuity of illustrators. Now they can assemble ersatz illustration-collages by themselves. PhotoShop has certainly not replaced illustrators altogether (and many fine illustrators employ PhotoShop as a tool), but this tool is far more threatening than any previous technological development in the history of illustration.

Here are some reasons why:

1. Prior to PhotoShop, collage and montage were alternatives to painting and drawing, either as a direct link to fine art, or as an option for mediocre painters or drawers. Some graphic designers occasionally used their own collage and montage to bypass illustrators altogether; currently with PhotoShop this is a common practice.

2. Prior to PhotoShop art directors and designers worked in concert with illustrators on the content of illustration, but were reluctant to interfere in the image-making process itself. Today, direct intervention through PhotoShop, such as digitally changing components of an artwork without the artist's permission, is on the rise.

3. Before digital methods, art directors and designers were hesitant to rely on stock art as a means to illustrate articles or advertisements. Yet with more efficient digital platforms and websites, stock art has become an accessible, inexpensive and hassle-free alternative to commissioning original illustration (it also bypasses troublesome illustrators).

55. Not prescient--reflecting American ideals, set down in our Constitution.
That's how things were in the past, when Norman Rockwell painted. We can hope it will be that way in the future, and strive to make it true. But we are in grave danger of losing that freedom in the present.

61. Give 'em hell, Harry Taylor... and thank you SO much!
Edited on Sun Apr-09-06 11:42 PM by Radio_Lady

Perhaps you missed the story over the weekend. Harry Taylor, a 61-year-old commercial realtor from North Carolina, stood up at an open event and expressed his feelings directly to President Bush last week. We all felt wonderful that SOMEBODY finally had the guts to do this. When I saw the clip of this, I identified with Harry's message -- it's the feelings expressed daily on the Internet by progressives and liberals everywhere.

Using PhotoShop techniques, one of our DU members "morphed" Harry's face on to Norman Rockwell's famous painting entitled "Freedom of Speech." More than 9,000 people have also thanked him at the website www.thankyouharrytaylor.org The counter says that 54,000 have visited the site itself.

Here's what I said:

April 9th, 2006 at 11:08 pm

Harry,

Give ‘em hell! It’s particularly true now — you have articulated what we have been thinking since the sElection of the pResident. I am proud of you and wish I could give you a huge hug.

Are you just an anonymous person? Do you prefer to remain that way? Can we find out who you are? Can you make contact with the Democratic Underground at www.democraticunderground.com

Please continue to give a voice to your views. Call in to Air America Radio and contact the news outlets this week. There are thousands who would be very happy to hear your opinions on what’s happening to our country.

Make worldwide peace a priority in 2006!

24. bush body language
Bush's body language in response to Harry Taylor:

He walks away. He takes a drink of water. He covers his eyes. Everything in the body language says "I don't want to listen" and "you hit me hard."

Very interesting Freudian slip: "Let "her" speak." Wow. That says volumes.

After this, while trying to come up with something to say, he goes into various facial gee gawing, stretching his face, moving his jaw, etc. What a goof.

He laughs when told to have the grace to be ashamed of himself. This really tells how much contempt he has for the principles of our democracy.

He totally stumbles in response. He is stunned and can say nothing for a time.

Finally he starts with "tap your phones." There is no one stopping him from anything he says yet he states, "Let me finish." Peculiar, but we've seen this before.

Then he says "I'm not going to apologize for what I did."

FWIW, I teach nonverbal communication at the college level. A customary warning about nonverbal communication is that it can be ambiguous and it is highly context dependent.

I agree; Harry has a phenomenal presence.

I found the expressions on some of the faces in the audience and the reaction to what Harry said be quite a surprise. Many applauded bush. How can anyone support this lying serial murderer of hundreds of thousands of people? How can they not see him for what he is?

He was so cocky. How could these people not see the sincerity and quiet composure of Harry in contrast?

I can only conclude they are simple souls, deluded and overwhelmed by the office, not the person.
