40. I'm unfamiliar with the actual process -- perhaps it has

something to do with how long they have served? Durbin is a 2nd term (or 3rd?) senator, Reid is a 4th term senator.

Or perhaps it has to do with the personality they think will work best in that position -- I think that these days people rarely agree with the "middle of the road" attitude, but the politicians still seem to be convinced that sort of conciliatory personality is best.

I would agree with their assessment IF the Dems were dealing with rational opponents -- but they're not.

Pay special attention to this paragraph, which means more than it says.

"If you read the press coverage of the story, you would have thought the issue surfaced on its own. In fact, however, the story was a little grenade rolled into the White House bunker by Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.). No one was aware of the port deal until Schumer—who had been tipped off by a source in the shipping industry—held a press conference, and another, and another until the press corps finally paid attention. As for Schumer, he popped up in news reports about the deal, but almost always as a “critic of the administration,” not as the initiator of the entire episode."

A great deal of what makes the press is set in motion long before the press picks it up. It's not like any real journalism is taking place, the episode mentioned above being a prime example. That issue was thrust before an unsuspecting media in such a way that the White House had not laid out a game plan to counter it before it made headlines; thus, it actually made headlines, and Schumer is responsible for that. For all the hand-wringing we do about the state of the media in this country, you'd think we'd realize that, but I suppose such is not the case.

Harry Reid is doing a fine job. He's not an attack dog in the open most of the time. Behind the scenes, however, he and many of his colleagues are fighting hard and appearing on the surface as an opposition party generally does.
