Hispanics to protest in 60 cities on Monday.
LOS ANGELES (AFP) - US Hispanic groups demanded an amnesty for illegal immigrants and planned a nation-wide day of protests, as a much-touted compromise immigration bill stalled in the Senate.

The groups, which are organizing a wave of protests in 60 US cities Monday in a bid to halt plans to expel illegal immigrants, reacted after the compromise law that would have allowed millions of undocumented workers to normalize their status in the United States failed to pass in the Senate.

Many US Hispanics feel personally targeted by much tougher legislation already passed in the House of Representatives that would kick out illegal workers, a move that would split many families.

The protests are expected to focus on the US capital of Washington, the southwestern state of Arizona, which shares a very porous border with Mexico, as well as the California cities of Los Angeles and San Diego.

3. Alas, the Hispanics have something to lose.
Most Americans have yet to feel the real pinch of what the fascists are perpetrating. Tho' it does seem that there is a slight awakening as the bodies come home from our latest adventure into imperialism.

5. I saw every kind of citizen in the big L.A. march.
In a way, this bringing up of labor conditions and wages and the whole enchilada could turn out well for all of us. :)

7. Patada!
I will be supporting the many Chicanos and Latinos in my community on Monday by marching with them. Another march was held this past Wed. and the participation had doubled from the previous ones, so folks are getting the message that this involves all working people and joining their friends and neighbors.

11. They are taking their votes to the streets...
it's all about respect for immigrants now, demanding REAL immigration reform, not sham bills like the one that never even reached a vote last week in the Senate. It's turning into massive voter registration campaigns too, to oust the Republican majority that passed a resolution last Dec. in the House which would make felons of millions of people in this country, citizens and undocumented workers, alike.

Another big event is already planned for May 1st, also.
