Volunteers in New Orleans....
A group of volunteers from my church just returned from 14 days working on homes in neighborhoods in New Orleans. They reported that the works groups they saw and worked with were all volunteers. The citizens were welcoming and very appreciative of the help. "Where was FEMA? Where was the government?" many folks asked. The only evidence of FEMA was a sign on a building. That was it. The work volunteers had to bring their own equipment, their own food, and provide for their own housing (they were housed in a neighborhood church.) When the locals were asked about government presence or assistance, they simply smiled and rolled their eyes...

Have any of you had experience either living or working in the Katrina area? Who's doing the work?

Is the Katrina area going to be the crucible for change in the next election?

1. The govt does not want any of those minority people to return and rebuild.

They want that area to be condemned and bulldozed so they can sell it for pennies on the dollar to big-time developers, make millions and make New Orleans a rich, white-only, Repuke voting bloc.

4. Thank your church for volunteering. FEMA, ha!
This is a good question, asked and screamed by many. We people are in this together, helping each other. FEMA? Ha! Our government? Again ha!

What happened, what was shown on the news after Katrina have changed many people's minds about this administration. On the 1 hand people saw pictures of bodies and people waiting for help, then you hear the administration saying "we have it under control". The inneptitude, the ignoring, the continued lack of government assistance has changed many minds. Actions speak louder than words.

Thank your church for doing this.

6. in my job search, I came across some jobs posts for FEMA in NO/Gulf area
recently. I wonder if feds are planning to hire people who will actually work to help residents ---or repubs who will go along with the Chertoff-Bush non-program.

7. This is the fascist regime's plan for us.....fend for yourself.
The government won't be helping.

This could happen to any one of us. We could have devastating tornadoes here in Illinois and the Midwest, wicked blizzards in the North, hurricanes on the East Coast, earthquakes on the West coast, and drought everywhere. It's scary as hell what these psychos are doing. I'll tell you this much, the repuke party won't be getting the AA vote. The last poll I saw was 2% AA supported these fascist rat bastards.

Thank you for helping the Katrina victims. My son's charity project for his Bar Mitzvah is helping Katrina victims through Randi Rhodes' 'Change for Change' with Habitat for Humanity. They need all the help they can get.:(

Thank you again for helping.
