Need some DU help. Where can I find a list of books banned in the USA?
I'm writing a letter to a Miami Herald columnist and I'd be very thankful if some DUers can point me in the direction of some lists of books banned in the US, both past and current.

Thanks in advance.

:hi:

2. I guess it depends on what you mean by "banned".
If you mean totally banned from the entire country, I'm pretty sure there aren't any.

But if you're looking for stuff that's been banned from various schools or libraries, here's a good place to start:

4. none
You're right. Many books are challenged or pulled from public and school libraries but I don't think any are "banned".

Maybe Turner Diaries or Anarchist Cookbook? I remeber there was some concern they contained bomb making instructions (I have worked in the book industry for years)

8. I thought Fanny Hill was banned from the whole country.

10. Not until 1966, according to this.

Fanny Hill, shrouded in controversy for most of its more than 250-year life, and banned from publication in the United States until 1966, was once considered immoral and without literary merit, even earning its author a jail sentence for obscenity.

The tale of a naïve young prostitute in bawdy eighteenth-century London who slowly rises to respectability, the novel–and its popularity–endured many bannings and critics, and today Fanny Hill is considered an important piece of political parody and sexual philosophy on par with French libertine novels.

This uncensored version is set from the 1749 edition and includes commentary by Charles Rembar, the lawyer who defended the novel in the 1966 U.S. Supreme Court case, and newly commissioned notes.

13. We are saying none are banned now in the US
But, skinner and I are saying there are no books truly banned in the US NOW. I checked, Anarchist cookbook and turner diaries are both available. They ARE banned in many other countries.

14. I wouldn't expect any books to be banned now.
I think most people figured out how ridiculous banning books is.

3. Check out the American Library Association
The ALA (www.ala.org) has excellent resources on banned books -- most frequently challenged books, most frequently challenged authors, etc.

BTW, I just finished reading "The Giver" by Lois Lowry -- I'm working my way through some of these lists and reading books that I've never had a chance to read before. Then, for fun (ha ha), I checked out a right wing review of the book through a link provided in Wikipedia. It's truly unbelievable how these people think.

Children need to be exposed to different ideas in order to develop critical thinking skills. That's what education is all about.

5. Some good suggestions here by others & also you might try
contacting the nearest state ACLU office.

They're pretty good about keeping up with this sort of thing.

16. Why this wouldn't have anything to do with Ana Mendendez's
column on the latest Cuban uproar over the elementary school book, would it?

That was a good column. It takes a Cuban-American born in L.A. to point out the hypocrisy of the Cuban-American community in Miami.
