SPANKOUT DAY
http://www.stophitting.org/spankOut/

What is SpankOut Day, USA?
"Raising Responsible (Good) Kids Without Hitting"
SpankOut Day USA was initiated in 1998 to give widespread attention to the need to end corporal punishment of children and to promote non-violent ways of teaching children appropriate behavior. EPOCH-USA (End Physical Punishment of Children) sponsors SpankOut Day USA on April 30th of each year. All parents, guardians, and caregivers are encouraged to refrain from hitting children on this day, and to seek alternative methods of discipline through programs available in community agencies, churches and schools.

Since 1998, over 500 informational events on child discipline have been carried out by organizations on SpankOut Day USA. Hundreds of individuals have participated in this observance.

You can do something to stop children from being hit, even if you only have a few minutes to help. Click here to see the SpankOut Day Tool Kit for easy, effective ideas.

1. we have never spanked, and have a well-behaved model 7 yr old who
is constantly complimented on by other adults and teachers for how polite and well mannered he is.

As an example, one of his classmates had a birthday party at a kid's museum. The party was over but the kids were playing for a while afterwards in the exhibits. I was chatting with one of the other fathers. My son called down from a balcony, "how much longer do I have?" I held up my hand with 5 fingers showing. I chatted some more, 5 minutes passed more or less. My son called down again "how much longer?" I made the symbol for zero.
My son merely picked up his jacket and started heading down the steps.
The other father looked at me incredulously..."how did you get him to be so obedient? I"d have to go get my son after repeated warnings".
I shrugged and said, "we set proportional boundaries and stick to them."

that's all it takes, folks.

2. violence begets violence.
Hit a child and you create an adult who believes in hitting.
