2. I think the OP's referring to the Sy Hersh article:
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/09/world/middleeast/09iran.html?ex=1144728000&en=519326a593a57fca&ei=5087

WASHINGTON, April 8 — The Bush administration, which publicly advocates negotiations to halt Iran's nuclear program, is accelerating military planning for possible attacks against Iran, and has not ruled out using tactical nuclear weapons, according to a new article.

The article, by Seymour M. Hersh in The New Yorker, asserts that the Pentagon this winter presented the White House with an option to use bunker-buster nuclear bombs against Iran's underground nuclear sites. When the Joint Chiefs of Staff later sought to drop that option, unidentified officials at the White House resisted, the article stated.

The article cites numerous anonymous sources, including former Pentagon and intelligence officials, as well as sources described as having ties to the Pentagon but no direct involvement in its decision-making.

Asked about the article, Frederick Jones, a National Security Council spokesman, said Saturday: "We're not going to discuss military planning. As the president has said repeatedly, we along with the international community are pursuing a diplomatic solution to the issues surrounding Iran's nuclear program."

3. I don't know why israel can't sort this itself
The whole charade seems based on the iranian refusal to recognize
the state of israel, and the empty klanging rhetoric of all that.

The iranians have to know, and surely they already do know,
that the IDF would completely destroy their country to the
ground if they were to use WMD's. So MAD is already clearly
in play, in the minds of any would-be middle east aspirants.

But when the US gets involved, it destabilizes what would
be otherwise a regional-theatre MAD, where the participants
come to learn over a hundred years or so, the power of disarmament,
of all that wasted money sitting in weapons-inventories that
when they are finally destroyed, is just a long pipe on the
toilet the taxpayer flushes their money in to.

Israel and its people have every right to exist and have all
their self determination, as well as all the other peoples around
there too. I think that Israel should join the nuke club formally
and as well india, pakistan, saudi arabia and iran.

Iran should, in return, recognitize israel, and a determination of
the final israeli borders. By making a fair deal at home, and
coming clean about the WMD's and the state terrorism of israeli's
undeclared arsenal of nukes, this whole problem, oh dear.

Naaahh... let's have world war 4, then after the war, the countries
will be gone, and america and the coalition of the willing can move
in and take over the middle east. Then we can have world war 5,
and destroy every major city on earth, back to the road warrior
myth being the operative future sci-fi reality, instead of
soylent green.
