I can't find it now, but several years ago I stumbled across an online account by someone who described meeting Bush in a Japanese restaurant. Bush picked a piece of thick seaweed (I think it's called "kombu") out of his soup, and stuck it in his jacket pocket, just like that palm frond.

Weird.
