"And Bishop recently plugged it before what he said was a receptive audience at the conservative Heritage Foundation think tank.

"I'm encouraged," Bishop said in an interview with The Associated Press. "I think there is some traction with the idea."

The bill would require the Interior Department and Forest Service to give 5 percent of public land to western states. States would hold the land in trust to be sold or leased with the proceeds going to public schools."

1. This seems okay to me
I think this is probably a good idea. Alot of areas in the west are short of land.

5. selling public land
Edited on Sun Apr-09-06 11:45 AM by spag68
is the most asinine idea I have heard lately, but it's nothing new. The rethugs from the logging industry and mining industry are solidly behind new land to rape with no public benefit. By the way Utah is a good idea.

12. They see PUBLIC land as a source of PRIVATE profits for their contributors
like Pombo's scheme to sell off national parks for pennies on the dollar. Benefits big business and corporate donors while leaving nothing for future generations; and the money from the sale (a mere $340 million, in the case proposed by rep.Pombo, for some 27 National monuments and parks) wouldn't necessarily go to "public schools" or any other "noble" cause; that anyone would be naive enough to believe such bullshit at this point is beyond me. Repugs are treating the entire country as their own personal holdings to do with as they see fit, and we MUST demand that they not get away with it!

2. Hopefully all 5% will be in Utah and they will be used for
dumping nuke waste. Utah is the state that is holding solid behind *ss regardless. So let them serve his need for a dumping ground. Sorry Dems from Utah - you are welcome to my state.

11. Excellent idea - you can bet Hatch would be just OUTRAGED!
He just wants his pillaging buds to get rich, of course.

4. Who is Senator Orrin White Supremist Women hater Hatch to sell our land?
He and his Aryan Supremist misogynistic, bigotted, racist friends need to be sold down the river to the highest or lowest bidders.

GET THEM OUT OF WASHINGTON and put them to work in a leather factory.

6. "Sold or leased"
In other words, to be exploited, without any supervision by either Interior or EPA, by contributors to
the Republican party, for their own financial gain and that of the Republican party.

7. "proceeds going to public schools" ... and reducing property taxes
... on the wealthy and corporations, of course. :eyes:

Orrin "Uriah Heep" Hatch continues to fellate the wealthy and privileged and advocate the rape and enslavement of the poor. He's a completely reprehensible slimeball.

9. maybe we could sell "Senator" Orin Hatch
I don't know who'd take him, but it's worth a try. One of my absolute least favorite political personages, he's pure scum.

10. OK. How about we sell the public lands in Utah to Hugo Chavez?
Or, the public lands in Texas, California, and Arizona to Mexico?

Seeing as how it's "our" land do we have a choice in buyers and price? Do we get a cut of the proceeds?
