SENATOR TRENT LOTT, the former Republican leader, was headed out of the Capitol on Friday when he was asked to sum up a week in which Tom Delay said he would quit Congress, the House budget unraveled, the Senate immigration bill crumbled and President Bush became embroiled in the city's most famous leak probe.

Mr. Lott hopped into an elevator and gestured toward Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas, a member of the current Republican leadership. "Our spokesperson will handle this response," he said, evoking laughter from reporters as the elevator doors shut.

Mr. Lott's deft disappearing act was just a taste of how odd life had become in Washington last week.

There had already been months of bad news: the war in Iraq, Hurricane Katrina, the political embarrassment over port security. But not until last week's cluster of political crises did Washington's Republicans seem to exhibit real self-doubt. Suddenly, the swaggering Alphas who run this city were turned into self-effacing Betas.

More like a bad year, but the momentum seems to be accelerating, no?

2. It HAS been a bad year for the GOP. I'd enjoy it a lot more if it didn't

mean my country was being trashed by a pack of lying jackals, but in any case, the GOP is headed for what looks like a real rough night on November 7.

Denny Hastert may be so discouraged that he'll return to his previous job as a carnie. I think he is the guy who runs the Tilt-A-Whirl ride, but I'm not sure.

And Bill Frist, THE CAT BUTCHER, who is already about as ineffective as it gets in the Senate, will be out of the Congress and moving around the country to various fundraisers. I don't think most of us will miss him, and I don't think GOP primary voters will support his campaign.

The bluer the better for 06 and 08 and beyond.

7. Didn't Andrew Card leave to spend more time with his family also, or

was that the week before? And of course there were a few more Republican indictments, which is becoming a weekly occurance ~ not to mention the Plame Leak bombshell that Bush may have been the leaker.

We'll have to do a 'Republican Week in Review' in order to keep up with crimes and tribulations of the majority party! :rofl:

With the downfall of DeLay, the Libby revelations, more discussion about DSM II and the defeat of the immigration bill, they had a very bad week.

I'm betting the low end of Bush next approval ratings will be in the high twenties. Anybody want to start a pool?
