Iran 'shoots down unmanned plane'

From correspondents in Tehran

April 09, 2006

IRAN had shot down an unmanned surveillance plane in the south amid reports that the United States is planning military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, a press report said today.

"This plane had taken off from Iraq and was filming border areas," a report in the hardline Jumhuri Eslami newspaper said.

It added the Islamic Republic "officials have obtained information from the plane system and recordings", without giving any further details.

US publications reported over the weekend that the White House was studying options for military strikes against Iran's nuclear facilities to pressure Tehran to abandon its controversial nuclear program.

7. I agree
According to Sy it will be up to the folks in the DOD or Joint Chiefs to stop him. They seem more willing to quit than to have that confrontation.

13. JCS
The JCS, if the resign, will just be replaced by lackeys rushed up the ladder of promotion and then filled into their posts to say "Yes, master" to Shrub.

12. Countdown has begun! 10-9-8...
This can be seen as the official start of the countdown clock.

It is extremely rare for wars to start out of the blue. The standard modus operandi before shooting and misery starts is a slow deterioration in relations and buildup of tensions. The speed slowly but surely picks up pace as time goes on until they go through lightening fast.

The deterioration started just after the 2004 election and is now ratcheting up. I see little reason for optimism as the situation has deteriorated with absolutely no improvement at all. Just a slow collapse of sanity and dialogue.

Even the Cuban Missile Crisis had moments where the situation had tiny improvements in the situation, even in the thick of hostile intentions.

A war with Iran is a matter of 'when', not 'if'. Both Ahmedinedzad and Shrub have messianic complexes PLUS both think they can kick the other's tailend. In war and politics, the actual situation doesn't matter. The situation become what each side percieves the reality to be.

The US military is exhausted but if Bush percieves that he will win, he will attack. The reality of whether or not we will win will have zero effect beyond how it affects BushCo's perceptions. This is a MAJOR, MAJOR miscalculation on the scale of Napoleon's invasion of Russia and Hitler's Operation Barbarossa.

War is politics with bloodshed and without the sanity.
