Thousands Rally for Immigrants in Texas
By ANABELLE GARAY, Associated Press Writer
11 minutes ago

DALLAS - Tens of thousands banged drums, waved U.S. flags and shouted "Si Se Puede!" — Spanish for "Yes, we can!" — in a protest urging federal lawmakers to pass immigration reform that would legalize an estimated 11 million undocumented workers. Rallies in the capitals of Minnesota and Iowa also drew thousands of protesters.

Dozens of demonstrations nationwide were set for Monday, a signal that what began as a string of disparate events — attracting tens and even hundreds of thousands of people — has become more coordinated.

"We don't have a leader like Martin Luther King or Cesar Chavez, but this is now a national immigrant rights movement," said Joshua Hoyt, director of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, which has helped organize Chicago-area rallies.

Activists say the Senate's decision last week not to push a bill that would have given many illegal immigrants a chance at citizenship is neither a cause for celebration nor a lost opportunity — it's a chance to regroup. And that's what they plan to do at demonstrations from Florida to Oregon that include school walkouts and marches in major cities

belong to a nation claiming former (and future) sovereignty over territory belonging to the United States.

8. these people are idiots. so are the one's carrying the Mexican flag
What's your point? Just because there are morons who want to revive the Confederacy, its okay for other people to pledge allegiance to a foreign power?

10. Allegiance? Is That What That Means
Tell that to every gas station that flys the American flag while funneling cash to other nations. Give me a fucking break!

12. is there some sort of coherent argument in your post?
because I've missed it. What does stores flying American flags and selling gas have to do with protesters who supposedly want to break down our immigration rules, who fly flags of foreign powers and carry banners like "This is our continent!"?

19. wow, it hard to respond to such hypocrisy.
I say that I don't understand your argument, and you call me rude and a bigot - yet I am the one being emotional? Live in glass houses much?

But go on and show the fragility of the open-borders argument by resorting to that old card "you must be a racist." Gee, I didn't see that one coming. :eyes:

26. Sorry, sorry
I got deleted and really wasn't sure what you were responding to. Thanks though. It amazes me how hypocritical and elitest some here are concerning this issue. Wave your flags people. That's what makes America free. "But if you are a Mexican!!!!! You shall BURN IN HELL!!!!"

I'm more pissed that businesses use the flag in advertisements to sell products. It's disgustingly hypocritical.

7. Mexico does not claim future sovereignty over US territory
The US took those territories by force of arms and the Mexican government signed treaties acknowledging that fact back in 1848.

9. Say That To Every Irish Descendant
that has a sticker on his or her car. And petition to abolish Saint Patty's Day. Then come back and moan about a Mexican Immigrant flying a Mexican flag. I personally dislike jingoism all together, but if you start going down this slippery slope, beware.

14. And do you not "see any reason" for me to call myself an Irish-

American? Or others call themselves a Mexican-American or Greek-Americans?

Or is it you think we should all "melt" into one boring homogeneous society that all speak the same, worship the same, eat the same kind of food, and on and on?

29. Vamanos!
Conservative gringos are really getting their pompous noses rubbed in it this week. Hundreds of thousands of Hispanics are taking to the streets, sending the U.S. Congress a loud, strong and intimidating message: Approve total amnesty for undocumented workers -- or else!

Hispanics make up the largest voting bloc in the nation. Congress sorely needs Hispanic votes and is ignoring letters and telephone calls from conservative constituents.

Some have suggested that massive Hispanic street demonstrations will backfire and cause Congress to think twice about voting in their favor. Wrong! It will do exactly the opposite. Street demonstrations will persuade politicos to approve pro-Hispanic legislation.

¡Todos a la calle!

35. Protests are about the House "felony" Resolution, not "retaking"
former Mexican territory or anything else, imho.

Sure, there may be some fringe groups playing for the cameras, but that happens across the political spectrum.
