Support grows for Feingold's recent stances
Iraq withdrawal, Bush censure gain backing at home, in Senate

By Brian Tumulty
Press-Gazette Washington bureau

WASHINGTON — Sen. Russ Feingold, the Wisconsin Democrat who wants to censure President Bush for authorizing warrant-less domestic wiretapping, doesn't want to link his proposal to the latest news about White House leaks of pre-Iraq war intelligence.

"I don't think we should take the kitchen sink approach," Feingold said.

Feingold was strenuously attacked by Republicans and marginalized by fellow Democrats last month when he suggested a presidential censure. And he suffered similar criticism when he became the first congressional lawmaker to call for a timetable for withdrawing troops from Iraq.

But his position on both the censure and withdrawal from Iraq appears less extreme now that some Democrats are agreeing with him publicly.

1. Rule of law, baby!
Those mealy mouthed SOBs aren't nearly as fond of that little ditty nowadays are they? I can't imagine why that possibly could be the case!

2. If Democrats would just stick with their beliefs like Feingold
we would be kicking some MAJOR behind right now. I strongly believe he is on the correct track.

8. He does at least one per county every year
Saturday he had a map showing the numbers for this year, looked like about 10 or so of the 72 Wisconsin counties already done. He had them numbered from the first one he did fourteen or so years ago, he was up to about 954 and will hit 1000 this year.

9. No protesters at all
but an adoring crowd of about 150 packed into the reading room in the public library. The only almost-challenging question was when a couple expressed their concern about their jobs being threatened by illegals.

Diplomatic as ever, he talked about his friendship with McCain and their recent trip to Iraq. He also repeated his frustration with other Democrats who won't take a stand for their principles, citing specifically Kerry and Edwards.

Got a laugh when someone asked if he had discussed the immigration issue with Sensenbrenner and he said sometimes it is difficult to discuss issues with him. Bryan Kennedy was in the crowd as an observer, and received a nice applause when he was asked if he had any questions. (Kennedy is the Dem challenger to Sensenbrenner this fall.)

At the start people filled out slips that were on their chairs and passed them in. Russ looked at each slip in order and called out names to see what the person had to say. He was a very attentive listener, asking some people for more information about issues they had and promising to get back to them with more information. One time he said he was in the process of creating a proposal on a topic and told the questioner he would send him a draft to get his opinion to see if it handled the concern.

He recorded the entire session, with both he and his assistant noting who asked what questions. Not a bit of campaigning, he even hushed the group when the suggestion of his candidacy for 08 was brought up.

Hard to believe that it is so simple to have a democracy.

10. I'll bet that Republican attack ad helped.
The one that showed Dems (including Feingold) saying variations of "Bush lied" with absolutely no rebuttal from the right. It made Bush out to be the criminal he is.

Here it is if you want a good laugh:
