Bush says he has no plans on his desk to attack Iran

Bush dismisses Iran reports as 'wild speculation'

WASHINGTON, April 10 (Reuters) - President George W. Bush said on Monday that force is not necessarily required to thwart Tehran's nuclear ambitions and dismissed reports of plans for military strikes on Iran as "wild speculation."

Bush, in his first comments on Iran since weekend news reports that the United States was considering military action, said diplomacy was his focus for keeping Tehran from developing nuclear arms.

The New Yorker magazine reported the administration was considering using tactical nuclear weapons against underground nuclear sites.

"We hear in Washington, you know, 'prevention means force,'" Bush told students and faculty at Johns Hopkins University. "It doesn't mean force, necessarily. In this case, it means diplomacy."

3. That's right - the plans aren't on his desk,
They're locked in a closet somewhere with lots of other Top Secret stuff. Bush goes in there to play sometimes, but he doesn't let Laura go in.

And we later found out that there were already plans, money had been designated, and troops were being moved.

he should have said, "i do not plan to attack iran"...and perhaps that might have sounded more truthful...of course, truth is not bush's forte.

Bush: 'No war plans on my desk' for Iraq

May 23, 2002 Posted: 12:58 PM EDT (1658 GMT)

BERLIN, Germany (CNN) -- President Bush reiterated Thursday that Iraq remains a significant threat, but he stopped short of saying the United States will go to war with the Middle Eastern country.

"I have no war plans on my desk," Bush said at a Berlin news conference during the first stop of his European tour. "We've got to use all means at our disposal to deal with Saddam Hussein."

His statement was in answer to a question about U.S. plans regarding Iraq and heightened concerns voiced throughout the world about the war on terror.

No plans for Iraq attack, says Bush

By Tom Raum, Berlin
US PRESIDENT George Bush yesterday described Iraq’s Saddam Hussein and his destructive weapons as a threat to all civilisation and appealed to sceptical German leaders and lawmakers for help in waging a wider war on terrorism. However, Mr Bush said he has no plans to attack Iraq.

Many European leaders have expressed reservations — at best — about a wider war on terror, especially if it means attacking Iraq. As many as 20,000 street protesters demonstrated against Mr Bush’s policies as he arrived in Berlin Wednesday evening.

For his part, Mr Schroeder side-stepped a question over whether he would back a US-led assault on Baghdad to topple Saddam, despite expressing reservations in the past about such a plan.

<snip>
Mr Bush added: ‘‘I told the chancellor that I have no war plans on my desk, which is the truth.’’

"On the other hand, we don't know everything about the future" - That got him off the hook with the bombing set for the Nevada Test Site.
