U.S. Rejects Idea That Iraq Near Civil War

The Bush administration on Monday rejected assertions by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, a close Arab ally, that Iraq is descending into civil war.

"That's not our assessment," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said. "We don't share that assessment."

Mubarak said in a television interview Saturday that civil war "has almost started" in Iraq and that an American troop withdrawal would only make the situation worse.

Things are so great, U.S. troops had to take over from the Iraqi military and started patrolling the streets of Baghdad again to keep the Iraqis from killing each other.

4. Big story in the Egyptian papers.

That story was on the front page of the Egyptian Gazette. So was the Hersh story about Bush planning to use nukes in Iraq. The Egyptians seem to believe both stories. And many Egyptians I've talked to...well, let's just say their opinion of Mubarak's veracity is about as high as the average DU'ers belief in the truthfulness of $hrub.

(I've spent many months in Egypt during the past year, and am still here.)

Just yesterday I was talking to some fellahin (farmers) in a little villlage out in the Nile Delta. One of them asked me a question I hear entirely too much in this country: Why do Americans hate us Arab people?
