My pics from protests in KC this evening
Edited on Mon Apr-10-06 07:34 PM by proud2Blib
All I can say is WOW. I knew something was up when I got downtown, still a mile or so from the rally and I saw many many groups of people parking their cars and walking toward the park where the rally was held. And tons of kids! Another clue was the traffic was as heavy heading INTO downtown as out of it. It was 5:00, when most cars are LEAVING downtown. And there is NO nightlife in downtown KC, so that is an unusual traffic pattern.

When I got to the rally, I was amazed at the number of people. I have no way of knowing how many. It was so big I couldn't get anywhere and get a good crowd shot.

I saw several kids from my school. One of the mothers, who I had never met before, cried and hugged me so hard. That's when I knew I was doing the right thing by being there. Another mother, who I do know, told her daughter "I told you Mrs. P would be here. I just knew she would support this cause." I saw one of my former kids who is now 17. His name is Elvis and I used to sing Elvis Presley songs to him. He remembered I gave him an Elvis CD and he still has it. I talked to him for quite awhile. He said "I am here because these are MY people. I don't like what I have been hearing on TV lately." Then he asked me if it was this bad during the 60s. He also reminded me his dad was deported back when he was my student. I remembered that well. It tore Elvis up. He said his dad is still in Honduras, trying to get back to KC. He hasn't seen him in 2 years. Elvis was angry. He asked if all gringos are mad at Hispanics. I told him I wasn't. What else could I say?

Anyhow, I am really glad I went. As I said earlier today, these are human beings, folks.

This is about a third of the crowd. I couldn't get a shot of the entire crowd. It was just HUGE.

This is the point, people!!

I loved this kid's shirt. He made it himself. It is reinforcements - the little holes you use on ripped notebook paper.

And whose flag is this? :)
This guy did have a US flag on the other side of this one.

This is for all who fear the Mexican flag. They are putting it on their cars too!! Oh no what shall we DO?? LOL

11. These hard working people here should be Americans
The Hispanics for the most part are hard working and family oriented. We are a country of immigrants and the majority of Hispanics have earned the moral right to stay here.

We need them naturalized so they can't be exploited by employers. This will also defeat employers paying them at slave labor wages.

We are also being racist to point out the Hispanic immigrants while over looking all the old Soviet Union bloc of countries and others.

It is time the borders are opened and only security checks are done. Keep out terrorists, let all others in.

We do now live in a global society, economically. Let's open the borders.

but I will. This is not about Hispanics...this about whether or not certain hispanics those who came in without permission have the right to stay in the country and work. This also applies to any other group that is here without documentation or without approval from our country. Also...the argument is not for naturalization but for amnesty. They will still be foreigners but with permission to live in this country. There were still be requirements for them to become citizens.

13. Equal rights for all people!
YEAH!!!

We must keep working on this, thanks for posting. I heard on AAR that Garden City, Kansas had 3000 people at their protest.

I don't get why people are upset over the flags, I like it on the car, very creative. Cool kid with the teeshirt too. YAY KC, good on you!

16. Actually....
That wasn't the Mexican Flag...it was the flag for the Virgen de Guadalupe.

15. I was at the rally...
It was interesting, got into a argument with a rather ignorant individual who made about a stupid comment about the H & R Block advertisement being handed out, the fact that it was in Spanish. I felt kinda bad for the kid that had the anti immigration sign up, I felt like the people who kinded crowded around him should of just left him alone though.
