I have a mate in the british army near basra at the moment. i think he manages to avoid the worst of it that the american troops have the deal with. i hope he gets out soon, but he says he has to stay in the army until he is debt free so he could be in for another 5 years or more. working class people shoulder the burden of the ruling classes follies once again.

Blair wont allow his kids to do something so lowly as joining the army (i believe he once made a comment when hearing someone elses kid planned on becoming a teacher "i want mine to do better than that!" - paraphrased highly but its the kind of guy he is)

of course in britain the royals join the military, harry is apparently on his way to iraq now (as long as he stays clear of my friend, he could do without a big fat bullseye anywhere near him!) but that is the expected thing to do - the monarchy is going to be in serious trouble when old liz pops her clogs and the last thing they need is the british public having a image of playboy princes sipping cocktails in st tropez. i think its an act of self preservation to be seen as 'doing their bit'.

out of interest, how many members of congress or the bush admin have family serving?

As far as I know, Senator Tim Johnson's son served in Iraq, and may continue to do so. I think Rep. Duncan Hunter might have a son in Iraq as well.

At any rate, it's shocking how personally uninvested our leaders are in this war. In other generations, it wasn't so.

I've always found it interesting that the Royals like to go out and look at their wars. I remember something about Prince Andrew fighting in, or rather, viewing the Falklands War from some friggate.

to be fair to andrew, he did serve in the falklands and he didnt have a safe cushy job either

i think there is more of a tradition of the upper classes serving in britain, in WW1 thousands of the 'elite' were killed on the battlefield. i think its a hangover from days of empire, where it was all jolly good fun what what to go see the world and kill a few brown people.
