DU sushi lovers, you MAY be supporting the Moonies. . .seriously!
I don't know what to make of this. In the print edition the Trib is going to publish a list of sushi restuarants that use Unification Church-affiliated True World Foods. Oy vey or should I say Soy Vey!

TRIBUNE SPECIAL REPORT
Sushi and Rev. Moon
How Americans’ growing appetite for sushi is helping to support his controversial church

By Monica Eng, Delroy Alexander and David Jackson
Tribune staff reporters
Published April 11, 2006

On a mission from their leader, five young men arrived in Chicago to open a little fish shop on Elston Avenue. Back then, in 1980, people of their faith were castigated as "Moonies" and called cult members. Yet the Japanese and American friends worked grueling hours and slept in a communal apartment as they slowly built the foundation of a commercial empire.

They were led by the vision of Rev. Sun Myung Moon, the self-proclaimed messiah who sustained their spirits as they played their part in fulfilling the global business plan he had devised.

Moon founded his controversial Unification Church six decades ago with the proclamation that he was asked by Jesus to save humanity. But he also built the empire blending his conservative politics, savvy capitalism and flair for spectacles such as mass weddings in Madison Square Garden.

In a remarkable story that has gone largely untold, Moon and his followers created an enterprise that reaped millions of dollars by dominating one of America's trendiest indulgences: sushi.

1. Well, my favorite kind is vegetable sushi...
so I guess I won't need the seafood.

2. I always get my sushi from a locally owned
Japanese restaurant. Hopefully they aren't buying Moonie fish.

3. This is a very interesting story.
I can't wait to pick up a hard copy of the Tribune to see which restuarants use the Moonie products.

4. This IS very interesting, thanks
Thanks for posting. I suspect, from reading the online piece, that every sushi restaurant of any reknown is a Moonie customer. Naniwa on Wells was the last place I dined with any frequency, but my travels rarely take me downtown these days.

It's kind of hard to find sushi in my neighborhood, but Moonies are easy to find. My local health food store is owned by affiliates of the Unification Church. It infuriates me. I used to have a link to a site where you could identify Moonie-owned businesses in every city, but I can't find it now. I'll poke around and see if I can find it.

7. Here we go: list of Moon controlled/affiliated businesses
Shiroi Hana is on this list, so is Lifespring Health Foods just down the street.

Rick Ross Institute has some of the best cult information I've found online. Go down to the bottom of the page to find links to many, many more Moon articles, including a long section devoted to Moon's US political ties.

5. Interesting info conflict.: "True World Foods, Inc., established in 1975 >
in Brooklyn, New York" is what "True World Foods" website states. The Tribune states that the "commercial empire" it was started in Chicago in 1980 so am I missing something? :hangover:

Although we rarely can afford to buy it admittedly I do love sushi (and some fish in general like Monk). After reading the Tribune article I'd rather not have it from "True World Foods" but not as much because of Moon but because my bigger concern is about the sanitation issues in the past and threatening of FDA inspectors. If you're going to eat raw fish you want it to be really fresh or IMO it's just plain nasty.

Hmmm.... it sounds from the article like Moon may have his hand in more then just fish for sushi "In fashioning a chain of businesses that would stretch from the ocean to restaurant tables across America, Moon and his followers created a structure uniquely able to capitalize on the nation's growing appetite for sushi and fresh fish."

Ya know it's rather a sad state of affairs when simply going grocery shopping turns into not just a health issue but a political one as well. ::sigh::

6. Then they're just gonna have to get money from me, the whole two

times a year--or less-that I can afford to get real sushi. It's quite possibly my favorite non-sex, non-chemical to put in my mouth.

I support terrorists by smoking green homegrown, too. (eyeroll)

EDIT: Real sushi, as opposed to the stuff you can sometimes get at the deli counter in certain grocery stores. It's okay, I guess, but it just doesn't quite scratch that itch. Eel roll seems to be the most successful of the prepackaged type--the rest tastes sort of, lame, I suspect preservatives.

8. Happily, I am not a sushi eater.
The only restaurant on the list that I have been to (and where I ate something cooked) was Happi Sushi. Interesting article.

12. More than sushi - Moon controls almost HALF this nation's fishing industry
and he did it every step of the way with help from his longtime partner, George Bush.
