It's official, we're spending more on gas than groceries

And, yes, we do drive a long ways to work--20 miles and 40 miles in opposite directions--but there isn't a whole lot we can do about that.

Here's approximately what we spend on both categories:

gas: 60.00 per month (approximately)

groceries: $250.00/mo.

Can you car pool with anyone? Is there public transportation? Maybe you could consider getting a car with better gas mileage. My little Ford Escort is a gas-miser. It doesn't have to be a Prius.

6. How did you get in the position where you have to collectively drive 120

miles everyday just for work?

I'm not blaming you for anything but given the way things are going you won't be able to afford to continue doing that.

If you both went in the same direction at least you could cut that number in half.

I have always made it a goal to keep work and home close together.

7. In Kansas City it's hard not to have to drive long distances

Everything is spread out all over the place. You just kind of have to find work where ever you can and then figure out a way to get there.

We don't have good public transportation so you have to drive.

10. I married a man in the wrong career

I'm in a high tech field where the work is mostly in urban areas but I'm married to a man who works in coal--the mines are all WAY out in the countryside. We live in the far suburbs sort of partway between.

It is to the point that I am going to have to stop coming home part of the week. I am in the process of getting a temporary satellite system put on my barn so I can stay at the farm most of the time until the house gets built there. I have work I have to do on the computer through out the day but that 40 miles/day driving is killing us. I spend around $70 a week since I have a farm truck and diesel has been very expensive.

9. Buy LOCAL...I've made my LAST trip to Wal-Mart!!!

In my area, there are still a few Farm Markets and smaller grocery stores. I can get everything there without having the wade through gas wasting traffic.

12. I shop on the way home from work.

So shopping really adds no significant milage. Our driving is almost 100% to work and back.
