Problems mount from 9/11 fallout (BBC)

The number of people with medical problems linked to the 9/11 attacks on New York has risen to at least 15,000.

The figure, put together for the BBC, counts those receiving treatment for problems related to breathing in dust.

Many of the victims say the government offered false reassurances that the Manhattan air was safe and are now pursuing a class-action lawsuit.

As the US government's newly appointed "health czar" John Howard confirmed to the BBC, there were between 30,000 and 50,000 people at or near Ground Zero who might have been exposed to the hazardous dust and no one really knows how many are suffering problems now.

All those down therecleaning that shit up, many probably undocumented, vacuuming up the asbestos dust in the weeks and months the followed. Do you suppose their mop buckets and their Hoovers had been modified to for toxic hazardous waste? I do hope they have somebody representing them, if they're still living, that is.

5. You know the towers came down on Tuesday and

Rudy re-opened most of the wall street area on the following Saturday. My neighbor wanted to go down and see it -- I went with him. I brought a surgical mask and wore it the whole time. There was a layer of powderized glass, concrete, plaster, bones, paper and ash about 4 inches thick all over wall street. I watched a tourist scoop up some of the ashes and said (half asking) "you know some of those ashes are people right?" He said nothing, sealed up a little envelope full and probably sold it on Ebay. Totally surreal.

There were pushcarts still full of donuts and donuts and plastic bins from street vendors who sold belts and wallets that were just abandoned. You didn't have to be Columbo to figure out that people had run for their lives and that the area was just frozen in time.

A Burger King re-opened for business. They didn't even clean out most of the ash and they were serving burgers (again with people's ashes in them).

Ironically, all of this rush to re-open was to create a sense of normalcy!
