Strake????
Here is what it is:

A Strake is

1. part of a boat or ship. It is a strip of planking in a wooden vessel or of plating in a metal one, running longitudinally along the vessel's side, bilge or bottom.
2. a device for controlling aerodynamic flow over an aircraft.
3. a tool for tamping down and levelling semi-fluid materials into a mould.

So why is a "Divine Strake" being used as a name for a weapon?

Am I missing something?

1. My thought is that "Divine Strike" sounded too apocalyptic
even for bushies.

2. Maybe . . .

3. Aviation thing.
*In aviation, a strake is an aerodynamic surface generally mounted on the fuselage of an aircraft to control airflow. The strake produces vortices by interacting with the airstream. Aircraft designers change the location, angle and shape of the strake to produce the desired interaction. The strake is commonly confused with a canard or a winglet.

20. It's a little "wing" on the front of the nose. They think that John Denver
canard was hit by a pelican and that brought his plane down.

11. I heard on NPR the other day,
that the gubmint actually has a computer that spits out the random names for these campaigns and projects. "Strake" just came up because an "S" name was needed.

I heard the end of it a couple of weeks ago. Although, right now, I can't remember too much of it.

The Pentagon announces it will explode a new bomb at a Nevada test site on June 2. The 700-ton bomb is called "Divine Strake." William Arkin, author of Code Names: Deciphering U.S. Military Plans, Programs, and Operations in the 9/11 World explains how bombs get their funny names.

12. It's not the "Strake" that bothers me...that's typical .mil...
...naming convention to my ears.

It's the "Divine" part that REALLY bothers me.

There's been an unnerving amount of "Freeedom" and "Enduring" and "Everlasting" and "Divine" naming going on for mil exercises since 2000.

When they start prefixing the exersises with "Megiddo" and "Rapture" and "666" it'll be time to duck, cover, and kiss yerself goodbye.

13. May be the same reason a local pastor was lecturing Sunday on the Rupture
I'm sure he had a big flock of the senior citizens there.

Bush just trying to make us all sound ignorant, just before he goes on his religious crusade to bring on the end of democracy.

18. Simple they probably wanted to use Divine Strike
but realized after Ws initial rhetoric on the invasion of Afghanistan, that if the words are too transparently echoing the crusades there is going to be some backlash. As if changing an i to an a changes anything...

24. Sacred Shoshone land...that's where the test site is
The test has been named ''Divine Strake,'' adding to the outrage felt by many Native Americans, who say the test site sits on sacred land.

''It's a mystery why they call it 'divine','' said Carrie Dann, a grandmother and executive director of the Western Shoshone Defense Project. ''Isn't 'divine' used for your deity, God, your sacredness? Why don't they call it 'Hell Strake?'''

''When you are working testing weaponry of destruction of life, you should not associate it with 'divine','' Dann added. ''We want this insanity to stop. No more bombs and no more testing.''
