It's the only way to "solve" the immigration debate, anyway. The money would move south - look at all the beachfront property suddenly opened up to condo developments! - and the labor would move north. Come to think of it, we should probably annex Canada while we're at it. More beachfront, albeit rather less balmy.

Then we build the wall at the Panama Canal, and have a couple of rednecks sit there with their case of beer and a couple of shotguns to keep out illegals.

(for the irony-impaired, yes, this is :sarcasm:)

1. After the Mexican American war
We took what we wanted and threw the rest back in the pond. We drew a line and said, OK you stay there. This is ours. Welcome to sunny California, New Mexico, and Arizona.

4. What A Great Idea - Make Mexico A State......
then all the illegals become legal. With Mexico being part of the U.S. they would be just like the rest of us and not get jobs because they would have been outsourced to India.

5. That's free trade
NAFTA, CAFTA.

If we had made them put labor and environmental standards in those treaties, it might have had a chance to work just the way you described.
