5. sometimes he's lame, others, he takes a decent shot like that
I think we have reached the point where the old pols are no longer afraid of Bush. They realize he's a toothless old lion who can't even control congress.

6. Hold it - that was an utterly stupid question
A lame duck President is one who cannot run again - Bush, Clinton, anyone in his second term.

That question - and the answer - was odd.

Gergen knows what a lame duck is, but I suspect the woman asking the question is not too knowledgeable. That was an incredible question. I thought it was a joke.

9. I thought is was used in terms of the relevancy of their time left as well
not just if they are running again. I need to go google.

17. No, it's not
All it means is that he's serving out his second term and can't run again.

Don't EVER make the mistake of thinking that google will give you accurate information, by the way. Lots of people use words or phrases incorrectly, and they'll show up in a search, but studying a little American history - in books - will give you the reality and the accuracy of the matter.

11. you're right about the provenance, but the usage has evolved, I think.
they're implying that, as a lame duck, he's lost most of his influence, especially over his own party.

the not running again bit seems to have lost its importance, almost as if, were he still eligible to run, he'd STILL be a lame duck, cause he's so feckless, and.....lame

18. So, all of a sudden,
because he's not doing well, they notice he's a lame duck?

He became a lame duck the day after the second stolen election in 2004.

I suspect you're right, though, because these nitwits who read the news and ask questions fed to them through their earpieces are stupid.

I'm so weary of stupid people who don't even know the most basic facts of American political history.

19. pretty much, WRT not doing well. I don't recall them mentioning
his lame duck term until things started going south after Katrina. up until then, the media were still more evidently sycophantic than they appear to be now. not that they aren't, when push comes to shove

all one has to do to realize that is listen to the questions those college kids axed him the other day at Johns Hopkins, and contrast them to the spitballs tossed his way by the WH Press CorpsE. even the socalled tough ones never are followed up. he gets away with those inane filibusters all the time; not that they're not entertaining in a masochistic, laugh while the world is ending sort of way

20. Fuckface at JH
One of the most compelling lines in the Washington Post coverage of that event - the Post sucks, by the way, but you knew that - was the statement about the "audience silence at all the points where laughter should have been." The JH folks were far too hip for that bullshit.

I will never understand why the alleged journalists in this country bent over and grabbed their ankles for this sonofabitch the way they did. There is no forgiveness for their ineptitude and sycophancy.

22. I agree with your point about Gergen
since you have correctly pointed out the misuse of the term I thought I would add... I agree that it would have been nice if Gergen had pointed out the error rather than go with it.

30. Gergen
He's such a quick little whore, his response - contributing to the inaccuracy - didn't surprise me, really.

But, don't you love it when these asskissers of both cheeks start piling on the "lame duck"?

Pass the popcorn.

I think we should see if we can reverse his bid to nuke Iran before we can call him a lame duck. Otherwise, we might all end up DEAD ducks.

21. leftchick - may i ask for any specifics that gergen gave for this
i would really enjoy knowing why he thinks so (and why the question was even asked)

was this about immigration
or the war
or the uncovering of the rampant lies he gave for war

or.... (so many to choose from i know but if gergen is saying it publicly i would like to hear what the reasons stated are)

thanks so much lc
my friends from north carolina....

32. Strangely enough, that works to his advantage on the Iran issue...
because now, he could give a shit what Congress or Public Opinion has to say - he'll never face election again.

Oh, when it comes to getting legislation passed, he's a lame duck, but when it comes to starting WW III, he's the cock of the walk.
