What kind of BS is MSNBC trying to pull?????
Talking to a Goldstar Mom who was endorsing the war, endorsing the 9-11 and Saddam link.. It was totally sickening what she was saying.. They tried to get their digs in on Cindy Sheehan as well.. She is so proud of her son and so am I-- the difference is I don't want him risking his life for an unjust war... This woman used 9-11 to justify the war and that just pisses me off and pisses me off that the news uses Mothers of soldiers this way.....

5. Well, she is entitled to her opinion just as Cindy is. And if
MSNBC wants to report on it, that is their right.

Parents of dead soldiers are not to be criticized, in my opinion. Right or wrong, they will grieve for a lifetime and should be allowed to voice their opinions freely and without being judged.

That's the point of the post.

22. Well, I didn't see. But I do know someone who lost a child in the
war, and they still support the war.

As crazy and wrong as it may be, some parents do continue to justify the death of their own child. But it is not for me to judge. My heart breaks for all of them.

Sure, there are Gold Star Mothers for Peace and other like groups, but the core group is solely a support group for mothers who have lost children to war and there are no political leanings.

A gold star mom for peace, like Cindy had lost her child and was ALSO against the war.

41. Do YOU know what a Gold Star Mom is?
Gold Star Mothers has been around since WW1. They are a non-political organization of mothers who have lost children in war. The organization takes no position on the war, but they support the troops 1000%. As individuals, many Gold Star Mothers are supportive of the war.

Gold Star Families for Peace is a group that Cindy helped found, and does take a position against the Iraq war. Cindy is not a member of Gold Star Mothers. She is a member of Gold Star Families for Peace.

My great aunt has been a Gold Star Mother since 1970, when her son was killed in Vietnam.

42. Well that explains what I heard about that
I guess her Son has passed and I am extremely sorry for her... But I cannot as a mother of a soldier, who is over there right now, endorse this war, or spread lies about it.. I can support the troops, and I do.. I know a few of the boys now, and they feel like family to me as well, I pray for them too..

It irks me when the lies are told to bolster the reason we went in the first place....

43. I will send good thoughts for your son
I am sure he will be fine, the odds are way in his favor. I live in Vermont, and there are many of our citizens in the NG that have deployed. While Vermonters have been strongly anti-war, many of the guardsmen come home and are less than happy about the anti-war activities that are going on here on their behalf. It's a very strange situation.

Vermont has always given more lives per capita than other states. It is very liberal, but very pro military, and very pro gun. Like I said, strange situation.

Best wishes to you and your son (assuming a male child, forgive me if I was wrong.)

18. I tend to agree
Walk a mile in their moccasins before judging. What parent wants to think their child died for no good reason? Sometimes we seek out ways to justify an in justice. Just let them be.

The news agency is another matter altogether! Give them hell... tell them they do no one any good by showing this stuff. It only makes the parent look irrational and the news agency look shifty.

39. I'm scared shitless for you, dogday
I won't pretend to know exactly how you feel, but I've tried. My mind won't let me go there... which is an indication to me that this sort of thing is a horrendous burden to a parent and the mere imaginings that this could be my situation would be exceedingly painful.

You are right. The media needs to be held accountable every bit as much as the administration. Spreading blatant lies under the guise of a parent who has lost a child is unconscionable, immoral, unethical, despicable and disgusting.

Is there anywhere here on DU that you know of where a list of names of fellow DU family and friends (serving in Iraq or Afghanistan, or even in the crews we now know are on the ground in Iran) might be found?

I know I did nothing that resulted in sending your son over there, but I feel like I should apologize.

but there is no 9-11 link with Saddam and anyone who "endorses" that is just plain ignorant. Perhaps she just can't face her loss knowing it was for bs reasons? Either way, I think MSNBC can try to make this war more appetizing to the public but I don't think Americans are buying it anymore.

Cindy started a group of gold star parents against the War but I think there are gold star groups that support it also.

I walk by houses with the blue stars in their windows which means they have a family member at war. It becomes a gold star if the person dies.

33. Then she is NOT a Gold Star Mom....
Back in WWI, people began hanging banners in their windows. Each Blue Star represented a son in the service. If one died, a gold star replaced the blue one.

The phrase "Gold Star Mom" does not necessarily mean that the lady belongs to the association with that name. But it does mean she lost a child in a war.

(My mother was a Gold Star Wife.)

8. Well
Don't get too discouraged. Most of America has woken up and realize Saddam wasn't involved in 9/11. I think the Mom you saw needs to find a reason for this idiot war and is willing to deny reality -- sort of like a battered wife who makes excuses for not leaving her wife-beating husband. Many people will always believe the Bush lies.

34. Forgive me my cynicism - but it was probably Karen H's secretary who
was on the phone (or a DeLay door pounder). Those who facilitate WH lies (GE) which we have been subject to, don't deserve to be believed and deserve cynicism.

It may be wrong of me to pick the subject of living and dead soldiers to say that, but it was wrong of GE to faciliate all the lies the caused them to be there and some of them to die. They've spent millions of dollars to make people, who don't know about the GE agenda to aid the WH, into believers and patriots.

And they are probably being paid millions to do it.

38. I know what you mean - I think we have to keep on making distinctions...
Edited on Thu Apr-13-06 02:35 PM by higher class
there is a distinction between our kids who are the soldiers and the brass.

Within those groups we have -

a distinction between the brass who support politicians, corporations, and those who lead the imperialist role vs honorable career brass who take a moral path.

There are also distinctions within the soldier groups.

And there are distinctions between the parents.

I don't think there are leftover accusers from Vietnam days who blame the kids anymore. We were always told that our military was there for defense. We didn't make up the Vietnam and Iraq wars lies for ourselves. We are guided by believing in our leaders' lies. We keep on being betrayed by them.
