It was the fall of 1970 in Northwest Arkansas. The gas wars were raging. I topped off my old Chevy Pickemtruck twice a day. The summer before my girlfriend and I invented oral sex in that old truck at the drive in theatre on highway 62. And no celibacy oath was involved. Those were the days.

your invention has made my life so much better. Though i am young i remember my first year of driving in 1999 and that summer in Texas we had $.75 a gallon, and then it went up from there. That was awesome. Never again though, it is almost to $3.00 again here in at IU in Bloomington. :(

and every so often, they would just stand guys out by the signs, and engage in "Gas wars".. eventually they would all get tired of climbing up and down the ladders, and would depart for Pizza Hut for beers, and the gas prices would stabilize at 20cents or so..

The spring of 1966 a friend and I were heading back to Wheaton in an old pickup truck and were about out of gas. We had seventeen cents between us and that got us almost two gallons of gas. It was enough to get home.

By the way, that was because of a "gas war", a phrase which had a much different meaning then than it does now. Generally back in those days you could buy regular anywhere for twenty-four cents and get a set of glasses with a fill-up.

.22/gal in Tampa in early 1971. Was making a little over whatever the min wage was then and sharing a house with 2 people I couldn't stand for (my share) $30 per month. Only thing that saved my sanity living there was that the branch library was a block away. I had a new 1970 Gremlin that had cost about $2500.

45. Ah, the 62 Drive-In

I used to hear about that in high school-- and The Rink, which was somewhere in the neighborhood, I think. What a date that would have made :evilgrin: I never made it to the 62 Drive-In, but I did make it to the Grove a couple of times :evilgrin: Unfortunately, the 62, the Grove, the Twin Cities, and maybe even the 112 Drive-In, have all gone the way of the dinosaur now.

And gas wars-- I can remember my grandmother going to the Fina station in Rogers and filling up at 19c/gallon during gas wars-- and then complaining a couple of weeks later when the price went back up to a quarter.

46. It was wonderful years

And it was a long trip to Springdale back then. The Rink, holy cow, heading for Farmington and Prairie Grove right past the drive in. I dated a girl from Prairie Grove (not the inventer) for a little while. The 62 drive-in is now a Super Walmart. Fayetteville has changed incredibly in the past 40 years. I'm going up there next month for some banking business. The 112 may still be open but I know the others are all gone. And then turning 21 and hanging out at Roger's Rec on Dickson Street. That was a great town to grow up in.
