1. May 1 may be
Edited on Thu Apr-13-06 06:25 PM by TallahasseeGrannie
an unfortunate choice of date.

I really don't know how I feel about this. Anyone care of enlighten me? I live in an area with virtually no immigration problem. Except after hurricanes.

3. Mixed feelings Grannie...boycotts sometimes hurt the regular people
like people who rely on tips, etc...

5. Many here at DU have called for a national boycott
Anti-war, anti-corporate greed, discimination and many other issues are involved. Mostly it's always been about sending a message to D.C.

DUer's have advocated people taking to the streets and/or boycotting.

Why don't we join this boycott? I see no reason not to.

I will have to send my kids to school, but I will not buy any goods at all. I will stay home unless I absolutely have to get out.

10. Looks Good
Gotta give'm credit!

You know, so far well over 1 million have turned out at the various marches. I can only wonder how many have stayed home. People are trying to say that they were all undocs, not so. Most of the marchers have been Americans.

7. Good Date
This years May Day is dedicated to the migrant worker in the U.S.

Russia, China, Cuba, Venezuela and many more countries will be in solidarity with the migrant worker.

8. Not that I want to brag about China's human rights' history...
but I don't think the date should matter at all.

I do think they want to cash in on the momentum their movement has right now.

33. Farmworkers in our county have marched on May Day...
for the past 18 years, with speeches by the United Farmworkers and generally exhibiting pride in their contribution to supporting our economy. Here, it is seen as the final rally of a month-long agricultural festival, in which those who make that celebration possible for the rest of us finally are recognized.

May Day began as a tribute to the American workers who fought and died for their rights in our country. It was the original Labor Day here, before our government usurped it.

Seems very fitting to me, that this date be reclaimed once again by American workers.

28. Sure we do
My grandfather came from England. He was the latest arriver in my family tree. Most of the others were Scotch, and came over in the late 1600's to early 1700's. I study genealogy pretty extensively.

My husband, however, came over in 1954.

But I just can't take the day off. I teach school. Now, if they would CLOSE the schools, that would be a different matter!

12. Well...
I work for myself and if I dont work or sell, then I dont eat. Corporate giants wont even be phased by this... just small business and people like me. If everybody boycotts buying that day.. Im fucked.. plain & simple... fucked. Not everyone deserves to be punished. Only those who are struggling already will be hurt.

Not Really
What people do not purchase on may 1st they'll simply have to make up for it on another day

ask an economist

16. ok. but the economist doesnt use the money they make that day
to buy food for that night. I do. So Im sorry, but I dont give a flaming rats ass what an economist has to say. And by that logic, if the people being punished by loss of sale are just going to make it up in following days... then what real effect does a boycott like this have? none. Other than for people like me.

18. Sensenbrenner?
I must have missed something... what does a WI congressman have to do with me exactly?
Yes, the migrants want some dignity.. but so do I. And did I mention... I kinda like to eat?
Also, this flyer seems to advocate opening up the border (am I wrong?) and Im not all that sure I even agree with that, if Im being honest. The flyer is SO extreme that Im expecting "free Mumia" at any moment. Is ANSWER involved in this? Im curious.

20. When Sensenbrenner
advocated making American children felons for helping their own parents you know what hit the fan, that was the catalyst.

We all like to eat.

"Also, this flyer seems to advocate opening up the border (am I wrong?)..."

I honestly think they mean building Sensenbrenner's wall of hate.

I do not know if ANSWER is involved.

24. I can't participate in the no work aspect of it.
I work in mental health. I assist adults who suffer from MR/MI/DD in their own homes. If I refuse to work that day who will help them?

I can refuse to purchase anything that is not needed, I can refuse to go out that evening, etc but I won't refuse to work. If I worked in another field I would consider it.

he's a truck driver and will probably be out on the road so that can't be helped.

Here at home we won't be getting out to buy anything.
