South Park Conservatives
http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/TV/04/13/southpark.muhammad.ap/index.html

The comedy -- in an episode aired during Holy Week for Christians -- instead featured an image of Jesus Christ defecating on President Bush and the American flag.

There goes that stupid little exercises in vulgarity, the so called "South Park Conservatives". I knew the creators of South Park were never "conservative". Hell, one of them was in a Micheal Moore movie. They are just out to make a buck. For them "making a buck" is pissing people off. When there is a Republican majority in Congress and they have the Whitehouse, the easiest target is Democrats. These guys are laughing all the way to the bank.

1. I disagree....
I think it points out the problem that exists in the muslim world in regards to free speech. In the cartoon you have an image of Jesus shitting on people. Where are the riots? Where are the burning buildings? There is likely outrage and rightly so, but where is the violent response so characteristic in the middle eastern muslim response to disagreement?

2. So where is the grinding poverty and dictatorships and war in the West?
I'm sorry, just pointing out that the reactions of a small section of Muslims have to do with desperation and anger fomented from a variety of horrible sociological situations.

14. cia/mi6/mossad aint spending tens of millions promoting riots and outrage
the devils hate Christianity and care not a whit about it, but Islam is 'other' and what the bullyboys needs is an 'other' to demonise and create an enemy. By promoting the extremism of the Islamic radicals, they win-win. Btw, notice the Xian fundies don't actually do anything about the corruption of western society? They attack abortion clinics etc, but when confronted by 'the last temptation of christ' for example not even one burned themself to death in front of theatre crowds, not even one. Same with the 'davinci code' which attacks the very root of the religion (jesus' divinity) or the south park mockery of christ...the most you hear is whining about liberal media or soon. (the same freaks who ignore the contemptuous treatment of Christianity protested the reagan movie on cbs, and had it killed, and effectively prevented moveon from buying network time for anti bush commercials, yet they do nothing about a very real assault on their faith, which suggests they don't care about the faith at all)
btw had you seen Hustler masgazine a generation ago, you would have seen Jesus in all sorts of crazy situations in cartoons.....while hustler was a porno type mag anyway, still noone ever accused Larry flynt of anti christianity (the one cartoon showing the merchant in front of a tent fulla crutches 4 sale angrily watching jesus curing cripples and throwing away crutches was kind of funny; even jesus prolly laughed at it!)

7. They don't identify themselves as conservatives.
Though they also don't identify themselves as liberals. In my experience, the show pokes fun at both sides of the political spectrum more or less evenly, though not in any one given episode. The CBS piece on them was pretty good, though, and certainly worth a look.

11. I am not a big fan, however ...

If we're talking about the episode that aired last night, I must say I haven't seen any comment in this thread that indicates an understanding of what it was about.

And this comment:

"The comedy -- in an episode aired during Holy Week for Christians -- instead featured an image of Jesus Christ defecating on President Bush and the American flag."

is just deliciously ironic.

12. They skewer people for being stupid and small-minded
granted, sometimes they are small minded in doing so but they can get away with it cause it's a cartoon. All in all, I like South Park.

They'll go after anyone who is stupid, hypocritical, or downright offensive (and be just as stupid and offensive in doing so :D)

13. I consider it a right-wing cartoon.
There was an episode based on Katrina in which people blame Bush when a flood was actually caused by Eric Cartman and one of the other boys.
