As Harp Magazine reports today Neil Young has announced a new album... and it's already finished!

The news that Neil Young has a complete album in the bag shocked all of us at JamBase. On the heels of his very successful 2005 release, Prairie Wind and with his award-winning documentary Neil Young: Heart of Gold in theatres now, no one saw this coming.

Filmmaker Jonathan Demme (who filmed Neil Young: Heart of Gold) recently sent an email stating; "Neil just finished writing and recording – with no warning – a new album called Life in War. It all happened in three days."

Young has long worked under the "strike while the iron is hot" mentality, often working in creative spurts and never forcing it. Well, it seems the iron must have been burning bright for him to create a complete album in three days!

As Katherine Silkaitis at Harp reported, Demme went on to say, "It is a brilliant electric assault, accompanied by a 100-voice choir, on Bush and the war in Iraq... Truly mind blowing. Will be in stores soon."

Details are sketchy at best, but the featured song, "Impeach the President" contains Bush's voice accompanied by a choir chanting "flip/flop."

As far as I can tell from the postings here, songs ARE being written and recorded -- but you could never tell that from listening to "Clean Channel" stations.

Whenever someone posts lyrics or links to new protest songs, I tend to paste them to my files (can't actually listen to most of them due to an old computer, though I did get to hear Secret Agent Plame) -- so I know they're out there.

What do you think of the idea of Air America giving protest songs some air time? I'd love it -- it'd give me one more reason to tune in while I drive, and a way to decide if I want to hunt up a CD by an artist I don't already know.

Production ground to a halt.

Foster, over the headphones says to Neil, "Uh, Neil, that was a little flat..."

Neil responded, "That's my sound, man..."

Production continued.

He's been wildly inconsistent at different perionds in his career, but he in generally great, and a true music Icon.

One of these days we may cross paths at a Neil Young concert. I hope his health is sturdy enough for him to keep recording and touring.

The other night I heard "Needle & the Damage Done" and was reminded of how the man can put a song into a guitar and then carve it into my memory. Just remarkable the way he does that.

And I do have one recommendation, even though it doesn't sound right. I swear -- it is a real thing: On Emmylou Harris' LP, LIGHT OF THE STABLE, a Christmas album (I'm not kidding), Emmylou, Neil Young, and Dolly Parton sing the title track. It is a splendid, splendid moment in studio recording. Not the sort of piece I'd normally cotton onto, but these 3 make it happen.

He was sort of a hippie in the early 70's. Was very anti-nukes in the late 70's. For a time in the early 80's, he was a Reagan supporter. Then he changed his mind about Reagan's America, and recorded "Rockin' In the Free World". He's always been a big part of Farm Aid. In the past few years, he's really turned against Bush (though I don't think he was much of a Bush fan to start with).

NY's not really liberal or conservative - more like a passionate populist.
