Berlusconi Lies About Election Fraud (what a surprise!)

My rough translation: "A series of 'misunderstandings' gave rise to the impression that 43,000 votes were in question. But the Courts of Appeal are examining many fewer. And the results are divided equally between the two sides. The Ministery of the Interior is not commenting."

[on edit, to explain this a bit: Berlusconi is claiming that 43,000 votes are suspicious. He lost by 25,000. In fact the courts are looking at far fewer, and B. is not picking up any votes. Bottom line: he's toast, unless he tries a coup d'etat.)

1. Isn't this the first Italian election
with "touch screens?"

4. Can you imagine the crap that Prodi's government...
...is going to get from the Berlusconi-owned media? They will be on him from day one and won't let up until he's a smoking wreck.

Berlusconi is a narcissistic megalomaniac and he will never forgive Prodi for beating him. Italian politics will be a disaster for the next decade.

7. Good point, but...
...I still think ol' Burlesque-oni has a few tricks up his sleeve. He's a dirty bugger and isn't above manufacturing scandal for his own ends.

8. I would have been surprised

if either side picks up a margin change even 3,000 votes net from that amount of ballots.

Smirking B was toast as soon as Prodi officially got that fourth Senate seat on expat votes. But a thief always thinks everyone else is stealing shit too.

It's good fun watching Prodi play now. He's evidently hard at work getting internal unity on what to do with the horrible mess Berlusconi is leaving and who is going to do what. It wouldn't surprise me if he withdraws Italy from Iraq within a week of assuming office.
