Fast food healthiest in Denmark, worst in US
Thu Apr 13, 10:49 AM ET

COPENHAGEN (AFP) - Fast food from McDonald's is healthiest in Denmark and worst in the United States, a Danish study comparing levels of the deadliest kind of fat, trans fatty acids, showed.

The study, conducted by researchers at Gentofte University Hospital in Denmark and published in this week's edition of the New England Journal of Medicine, compared meals bought at McDonald's and Kentucky Fried Chicken in 20 countries around the world.

A large meal of chicken nuggets and french fries at McDonald's in the United States contained 10.1 grams of trans fatty acids, while the same meal in France contained 5.9 grams and just 0.33 grams in Denmark, Steen Stender, who headed the research project, told AFP

"Many people think that wherever you go in the world you get the same thing at McDonald's, but in fact that is not the case," Stender told AFP.

2. Somebody with a clue correct me, but I'm mulling this in my head
and I'm remembering something I read that was about NOT REUSING the same cooking oil for very long because the heat breaks up the molecules, turning the less-harmful kind of fat/oil into the more-harmful variety. I wonder how much that has to do with it?

I managed somehow to avoid ever working in fast food, but I've heard stories from several people on the front lines in that nightmare of a job, and I'm betting the difference is that here in 'Murrika we use the oil over and over and over because saving a few bucks is more important than the health of the consumers.

3. It has to do mostly with the use of trans fats.

Many other countries ban or severely restrict their use. As for reusing oil I have also read that the more you use it the more it breaks down and becomes more oxidized. On the rare occasions I fry anything I use the oil once and it gets tossed.
