It's Easter Weekend: What Will You Say To Your Repuke Family Members?
Edited on Fri Apr-14-06 10:28 AM by Dr. Jones
Undoubtedly this weekend many families across this nation will gather in homes to celebrate Easter. Some families, unfortunately, contain family members who are poisoned by the stench of Republicanism. This makes for some interesting, light-hearted, friendly dinnertime conversation where afterwards, we sit around the dinnertable holding hands and singing, "Kum-ba-ya."

Consider the following Repuke talking points:

"So what if Bush leaked information to the press. So what if he declassified documents. He can do that. He's our President and I think we ought to trust him."

"The liberals will do ANYTHING to gain power back in 2006."

"Those liberals just want to see our soldiers in Iraq killed off so they can claim the war was a failure."

"Bush can wiretap me, I don't care. I ain't got nothin' to hide."

"Them damn illegals, they're ruinin' our country - we should just round 'em up and toss 'em back across the border on their asses."

"Bush is right, we've got to fight them over there so we don't have to fight them here."

"Saddam was a menace, a tryant - we HAD to get rid of him. He gassed his own people, he killed babies, he had WMDs that were shipped to Syria before the war. It's a FACT."

"Bush did all he could to save the people after Katrina. They said nothing about the levees breaching, only topping. It was the fault of the state and local levels. They just weren't prepared."

"We should nuke the hell outta Iran and the entire middle east. Just nuke 'em."

"Remember 9/11. THEY attacked us. THEY started this war. We are fighting terrorists in Iraq. We are fighting for our freedom and bringing democracy to them."

"Bush is only trying to protect us. He isn't a tryant! I don't mind giving up some of my personal liberties for extra security."

"This is a dangerous world. Liberals just can't accept that. They are so namby-pamby. If Kerry were in office our country would self-destruct, and we'd get attacked again big-time."

"There must be another angle to the story about Marey Carey the porn star dining with Bush. The sources you quoted were clearly biased. Maybe Bush wants to witness to the woman."

AND I LOVE THIS ONE:

"Instead of badmouthing Bush, why don't you get down on your knees and pray for the man!"

NOTE: Did they pray for Clinton? Hmmm, I seem to remember nothing but BADMOUTHING and CLINTON-BASHING...(insert hypocrisy)...

How will you respond to your repuke family members?

27. Well, the way I am
There is no way I can speak for more than five minutes without bringing it up!

They just don't argue anymore. heh heh And my father, who back in 2000 told me maybe Bush wouldn't be so bad because CHENEY seemed like a no-nonsense kind of guy (causing me to nearly blow a gasket right there at the family dinner table) has come around like gangbusters to my point of view.

31. thanks for being the voice of reason to your family! I couldnt budge mine
How could any intellegent person not come around after what we have seen over the past 5+ years.

But there are many who think the clothesless emperor is fully dressed! I dont get it.

I think alot of people thought Cheney would provide reason and statesmanship to the misadministration,

but he has rissen as the half-dead, deamon-chickenhawk from hell.

you sound like you have a nice family and I am sure you have impressed them with your ability to free think and see things that so many others miss. I have a feeling they are very proud of you!

12. My family's Easter isn't until next week, BUT
Luckily most of those in attendance are just the choir I preach to, excluding maybe 6 members (we have a huge extended family, will be at least 50 people sitting around eating). Those who support Bush are greedy SOB's, but they aren't liars, Bush is God because he cut their taxes. They care nothing about the killing and maiming in Iraq, they care nothing if the elderly and young go without food, electricity, water, shelter, medicine. They care nothing about the price of gas, as all of them can do their work from home.

So luckily I don't have to fight any bullshit outright lies, BUT I have to refuse to talk politics with them or else it gets too hard not to say "fuck you your greedy asshole, you are just a fucking parasite"....sigh

13. When you are sitting at a meal
lovingly purchased and prepared for you by someone else, regardless of their political views, you smile and nod.

And change the subject and comment on the weather and the ham and who is winning on American Idol.

Or if you have invited people to share your meal in honor of Easter, you do the same.

Take the high road. If they are crass enough to talk politics at dinner, don't join in. Bad manners are bad manners. You aren't going to win anyone over to your side with dinner arguments. You are just going to put the hostess through a lot of pain. I guess bottom line would be if you hate the people so much then don't accept the invitation.

15. Ooooo, that's HARD TO DO, Grannie, that's tough!
I can't do it - it's very hard for me to bite my tongue. If they say something off base, yikes, I just can't control myself. I HAVE to disagree.

Your suggestions are good for sure, but ooooooo! I don't think I can do it!

23. Then practice some comments
things like...

Oh, Uncle Bob, you look too great in that tie (probably some ugly thing) to argue with you today.

Or....Aunt Lil? How can I argue today at this wonderful meal that Grannie made for us when you have that wonderful new perm?

You know, you don't necessarily have to sound SINCERE when you say this, but you take the high road and don't spoil dinner. Now, on your after dinner walks, no holds barred! Just don't hit anybody and don't spoil things for Mama.

Because....if Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy. At least that is the way it is in our family.

16. what repuke family members?
They're all "independents" now.

Also something is very off in the WH, with Rove perhaps? Sending Bush out to do public speeches strikes me as very odd. Bush is a disaster at this kind of thing, doesn't make sense from a PR standpoint.

17. Ill go get in my closet and pray.
Ill ask God to help me make these people see what theyre doing to this country. Ill ask him/her/it to give me strength and guidance. Ill tell God that it aint easy bein me and hope he can make things better. Then Ill go out and get laughed at for being so naieve and starry-eyed. Then Ill go back to my closet and pray again, asking God to punish those evil people. Maybe God will strike them down with lightening bolts or something.

18. Well, let's see....
I cut my Dad out of my life when he tried to choke me while I was pregnant. my mom divorced him for his physical abuse.

I cut my mom out of my life when she embezzled thousands of dollars from me. (make that tens of thousands) Even if I wanted her back she told me that if I ever hired a lawyer against her that she would never talk to me again. She may have also been scared (and rightly so) that she would end up in prison.

My husband's family has let me know they do not like me because I called child welfare on one of their members. They said even if the kids ended up in hospital that you never call child welfare. Luckily my husband and I are healthy enough to not give in to them. Although my husband will be going to his Republican families' Easter celebration I will not. I do not care for someone who has told me point blank that he agrees with, and supports, the torture. I do not need to be around those types of people.

Even though it hurts, I will be alone on Easter. This is my choice as I can not abide by decisions people make. It is one thing to ignore simple things but these people have made very bad decisions and I can not support that. It is hard when you feel like an orphan but at least I can look myself in the mirror.

Your experiences have been very hurtful. I'd probably do the same thing you're doing - stay behind and avoid further problems.

If it makes you feel any better, my wife and I aren't going anywhere either. I am disabled temporarily (long-term temporarily apparently) and can't get outside my damn front door due to pain and illness. Anyhow, I have a heart for people who are alone during these holidays, there's probably more than we realize.

33. Thank you, Dr. Jones.
My experiences especially hurt over holiday times. Is it so bad just to want a normal family who loves you no matter what? I can not wish too long because I cry for something I know I will never have outside of my sons and husband.

My thoughts will be with during this holiday weekend. I will be there in spirit. Happy Easter, my friend. (and good luck in your recovery)

Not one of those very true comments are actually statements of fact. Everything is one big massive "WHAT IF" and/or outright speculation. Kind of like this old book I hear they're really into.
