Omaha Schools Split Along Race Lines
Nebraska Lawmakers Split Omaha School District Along Racial Lines
By SCOTT BAUER
The Associated Press

LINCOLN, Neb. - In a move decried by some as state-sponsored segregation, the Legislature voted Thursday to divide the Omaha school system into three districts one mostly black, one predominantly white and one largely Hispanic.

Supporters said the plan would give minorities control over their own school board and ensure that their children are not shortchanged in favor of white youngsters.

Republican Gov. Dave Heineman signed the measure into law.

Omaha Sen. Pat Bourne decried the bill, saying, "We will go down in history as one of the first states in 20 years to set race relations back."

"History will not, and should not, judge us kindly," said Sen. Gwen Howard of Omaha.

Attorney General Jon Bruning sent a letter to one of the measure's opponents saying that the bill could be in violation of the Constitution's equal-protection clause and that lawsuits almost certainly will be filed.

3. Why would you assume that's all Blacks can do?
You are ignoring what Black educators and administrators all over America are doing--and it's a hell of a lot more than THAT!

2. Correct me please
but I believe this was advocated by a black legislature who, as the story states, wants black to have control of their own children's educational destiny. Is that setting race relations back?

4. Yes, African-American with a capital "D"
Very liberal and outspoken Democrat legislator in Omaha.

My cousin there has been working on his campaigns for some time. He is very well thought of in the local community.

5. I'm not sure if this is the correct response but
he does address the issue that the schools are already segregated de facto style. This move will have unintended consequences for sure, but I'll give the guy that much credit. He's responding to the segregation that exists, even if he seems to be admitting defeat.

6. One giant step backward for Omaha
One giant leap forward into the annals of gross stupidity for the proponents of this ridiculous, patently illegal legislation.

8. I'm shocked this isn't getting more attention here
I searched for a thread on this because I had not seen one. I didn't even know about this until I caught the end of the Situation Room.

I am simply appalled and disgusted that schools are being segregated along racial lines in this day and age.
