Arrests in Crawford Happening Now
Arrests in Crawford Happening Now

Submitted by davidswanson on Fri, 2006-04-14 17:53. Nonviolent Resistance

Barbara Cummings just phoned from outside Bush's ranch in Carwford, Texas, to say that she and about 14 others, including Cindy Sheehan, are about to be arrested for trespassing. They had set up four tents in the same location where Cindy originally was stopped last August. there is a county ordinance against trespassing. The police gave them a 10 minute warning several minutes ago. Arrests are about to happen. Updates will be posted as we can get them.

4. With these arrests and the student walk outs and the mass marches for
immigrant rights it almost seems like the 60's again.

It seems to me that we should be marching against the war every weekend. But the old 60's activism is no longer alive I'm afraid. I am not marching either so I have nothing to be proud of.

We just don't have the same spirit we use to have. I am going on 60 yrs old and this is the most intrusive, fascist, dictatorship like administration in my life time and yet we yawn and protest on the web.

I am not the type to start a demonstration but I would love to join a bunch of progressives in the streets.

21. Whose asses are on the line?
In the 60s, any male of draft age was vulnerable. Demography, the baby boom contained lots and lots of people at risk. They all had family and friends which made the anti group even larger.

The marvelous immigrant marches were probably so strong because they are now the targets. They have lots of family and friends too.

When you're the frog in the pot where the heat is being gradually raised, it's a much slower boiling point than when you're the immediate target group that's been thrown into the frying pan.

22. Actually more of us are threatened than in the 60's.
Edited on Fri Apr-14-06 02:23 PM by Mountainman
We have a nut in the White House with his hand on the nuclear trigger, We have a fool in the White House that says he does not have to abide by the Constitution that he swore to uphold. We have a government controlled by one party. We have lost the rights given to us by the 4th amendment. We are losing our standard of living and our way of life. Our county is being sold to the highest bidder. I believed that the Supreme Court would protect us against such a government in the 60's.

The whole country is becoming a dictatorship run by fascists only most of us don't realize it. I think we have more to march about today than in the 60's.

24. Maybe you missed my point?
Yes we, and the whole world, are more threatened than ever by BushCo.

However, most people in this country don't perceive this threat on a personal basis. Their jobs may be outsourcing and they can't afford gasoline, but they are not being shipped to the jungle or being legislated 'criminals.'

It seems to take a real threat of governmental decreed death and destruction on a personal level to get a majority to react. That time may be coming, but it isn't here yet.

Rather than reacting, most people in this country are enjoying the Hot Tub while it lasts.

not that I think that anyone who gets arrested especially DU'ers and Cindy is good situation, but I think that these arrests will bring a BRIGHT media spotlight on the anti war protest(s) - and I think that is excellent.

WTG Cindy and DU'ers - you got em all stirred up

13. Got her on the phone now
Edited on Fri Apr-14-06 01:28 PM by Mabus
She said that the arrests were not unexpected, they were planned. The lady at the Peace House said the cops were being hard-nosed this time. The paddy wagon just went by the Peace House.

The pro-war people are starting to come out. They expect a couple of hundred pro-war people. There's one out there with a sign that says "I love George Bush."

People, especially in Texas, need to get out there. Check in at the Peace House.

on edit: there is plenty of room for tents. There is food. The entertainment is fantastic. Emma's Revolution is performing again tonight. Proud says they are great.

Rev. Lowery is speaking tonight.

23. I doubt it
As I understand it the people who got arrested were close to the Bushit Ranch. Proud was at the Peace House when she saw the pro-war ninny with the sign.

28. They should have been arrested
They rode horses in the midday hot sun on 10 miles of asphalt to come harrass us at camp. They had painted stupid sayings on the horses. Looked like animal cruelty to me. They also rode those horses through the parking lot next to Camp Casey - AFTER they were told it was private property and they needed to leave. And a couple of them were obviously drunk.

Yes, the police were called, and no, none of them were arrested.

Yeah they love to arrest protesters; but not uber-rich, mass murdering opportunists. Typical.

20. When Will They Learn - If They Didn't Make Arrests Probably There....
would be no press whatsoever about them being there. Maybe just a little blip in some obscure place in the newspaper.

However - with arrests - it calls attention to the protest. Gets them airtime on TV,front page newstories, etc.
