Maybe they finally figured that whining about nothing isn't working out for them.

I'm sure they have retreated to figure out a new, exciting "war on..." to get their tighty whities in a bundle over.

It's one 'o them pagan thangs
The Saxon's Sacrificial Goddess of Spring Eoster or Ostara a northern form of Astarte.

The Easter Bunny is the Moonhare sacred to the Goddess in both Eastern and Western spirituality. (Easter is a moon based holy day) Recalling the myths of Hathor-Astarte who laid the golden egg of the (growing since winter solstice) sun, Germans used to say the Hare would lay eggs for good children on Easter Eve.

The Persians began their solar New Year at the spring equinox and up to the mid 18th C. still followed the old custom of presenting each other with colored eggs for the occasion.

Eggs are always a symbol of rebirth which is why they are colored red (traditionally) which is the color of life (blood).

Most religious customs are a blending of the old and the new.

We won't get into the whole hero myth of the self-sacrificing/resurrecting god that stretches back to pre-Egyptian times.

But most of that info was straight out of A Woman's Encyclopedia of Mysteries and Secrets. The author is a proofreader who kept running across these interesting tidbits on women in religion and spirituality while fact checking academic texts she was working on.

Best just to stick a finger in anywhere and start reading. For instance, one of my student's names in Hannah. As it turns out, from the book, a very old Jewish name that means "The Nether Upsurge". And I never let her forget it either. I did a portrait of her and named it that.

41. There wouldn't be a book of Jungian Archetypes per se.
Edited on Sat Apr-15-06 12:06 PM by patrice
C.G. Jung just "gleaned" his understanding (named and labeled his Archetypes) from studying Religion and Mythology from ALL cultures throughout History. LOTS of similarities. Jung also studied, and treated, people who were institutionalized for being "crazy".

His theories are essentially based in biology (biological tendencies and pre-dispositions that affect perception and functionality).

36. Oh...and another tidbit that I find interesting re: eggs and spring....
Birds need a certain amount of sunlight in order to be able to lay eggs. (corporate chicken farms leave the lights on very long hours to force production...but anyway....)

By some "coincidence" the amount of light needed for the mating to begin starts right around Valentine's Day. You know...the Lover's Holiday. And Voila! by the time Easter rolls around you've got Eggs.

Religion is a codification of the awful (Awe-Full) qualities people encountered in nature. Information that needed to be passed along to the next generation. It's like the Hindu and the Sacred Cow. The reason the Cow was revered in the first place was that it gave food and clothing to the people with the sacrifice of it's body. That reverence and acknowledgement became formalized and ritualized to the point that it became separate from, and ultimately lost, it's original function.

Anyway..enough yammering. I've got a wide range of reading habits, religion and psychology among them. (College minors in both subjects)

How to Participate

Your mission, if you choose to accept it:

1. If you have a DVD of The God Who Wasn’t There, place it in a Christian church between now and Easter Sunday. Take pictures of yourself doing it (very important), and email them with your report to pictures@beyondbeliefmedia.com so that we can publish your mission on the site. In return, you will get a brand new DVD of The God Who Wasn’t There to replace the one you planted. If you also place some flyers in the same church (see below) your DVD will be personally inscribed and signed by The God Who Wasn’t There director Brian Flemming.

2. If you don’t currently have a DVD, download a flyer or two at this link, and print out a bunch of copies. Hide these copies creatively (see below) in one or more Christian churches between now and Easter Sunday. Take pictures of yourself doing at least one plant (very important), and email them with your report to pictures@beyondbeliefmedia.com so that we can publish your mission on the site. In return, you will get a brand new DVD of The God Who Wasn’t There. If your mission hits more than one church, your DVD will be personally inscribed and signed by Brian Flemming.

Phonecam pix are fine–it just has to show the action happening. Another shot of the church itself would be nice, too. Examples and tips for smooth sailing are below.

To sum up, email your mission report to pictures@beyondbeliefmedia.com. The report should include 1) Your description of the mission. 2) Pictures from the mission. 3) Your mailing address, so we can send your DVD. 4) Any inscription you would like if you’re getting a signed DVD. (We won’t publish your name or any personal information about you on the site–just your mission report and pictures. Tell us the nickname you want us to use if you want to be credited as other than “Anonymous Operative”.)

TIPS

–Use your imagination, and adapt to your surroundings. Case a few different churches. Some are open, some are not. You don’t have to choose the first one you see.

–An ideal hit would be planting a DVD in a hymnal right there in the sanctuary. That way it will most likely be discovered during a church service, probably the Easter Sunday service. Case a few churches and see how easy it is to get into the sanctuary. Some are surprisingly accessible, and you’ll be left alone as you “pray” in the pews.

–Try to imagine the moment that your DVD or flyer is discovered. What would make the most dramatic impact? How can you increase the likelihood that a child will discover it first?

–If you feel a bad vibe in the middle of a mission, just abort. There are churches everywhere. The next one you try will probably be a cakewalk. (A regular one, not the Iraq kind.) Just approach each target as if you are looking around, interested in the architecture (that’s why you have the camera). Then if it feels right, plant your items.

–The basic deal is that you get a signed DVD for one standard mission. But if you want to do more, please do. Plant multiple items at one location even if you’re planting a DVD. You’ll be suitably rewarded beyond your initial combat pay (CD soundtrack, signed poster, etc.).

IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING

But we’ll say it anyway:

Only go through unlocked doors. Do not harm any church property. No graffiti, stickers, etc. We’re spreading knowledge, not harm.

Be polite and upbeat on any messages you write with your planted items.

The overall point: If people are to criticize us, it should be for telling the truth, because we can defend that. We don’t want to have to defend against vandalism or breaking and entering. Don’t let them change the subject.

It would be what a syzygy does.

It's an obtuse pun on the prefix syn-, which also begins synthesis.

I think syzygy is in the Oxford English Dictionary, but sygygate isn't.

45. Speaking of the OED
Have you read the book - The Meaning of Everything - The Story of the OED? I listened to it on Audio CD. Fascinating, and fun!

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0198607024/103-0314224-4147847?v=glance&n=283155

From AudioFile
The amazing history of the OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY is recounted by its author, and it's a rousing listen. Rife with wit, anecdotes galore, and entertaining wordplay, this audiobook is a must for lovers of the English language. A worthy follow-up to Winchester's THE PROFESSOR AND THE MADMAN, this telling of the creation of the OED reminds one of a decades-long climb up a lexicographer's Everest, with much struggle, infighting, and politics determining the success of the endeavor. Winchester reads crisply, suavely, and convincingly, revealing himself to be an author completely at ease with both the microphone and his material, a rarity in audiobooks. The OED is a monumental achievement, and its history as told by Winchester is a milestone in the epic journey of our language. D.J.B.
