I don't remember the last time I had a vacation. The only time in the last 6 years we wen't anywhere was for funerals and other family emergencies. I buy peak oil. I don't think there is a alternative, or a combination of alternatives, that can replace what oil has done on a global scale. I'm no scientist though, so maybe there is. I could be completely wrong, Bush and his friends control the price of oil, and eventually 6.5 billion people will be able to live the life that we live after civilization gets to the point where nobody votes for people like Bush anymore.

1) So many are driving that it depletes supply and thus demand increases resulting in a spike in cost? (as if Easter Sunday driving has that much impact on supply)

or

2) The companies take advantage of knowing that consumption will increase for a certain weekend (eg Easter, Fourth of July, Christmas, etc.) and raise the price during that period in order to boost profits.

I think the latter is the case. From the OP I would guess that the first explanation is believed.

Oil companies are what they are, I won't argue that. But if we live by their rules, and the society that they've created, and they do control the prices like that to boost profits, good for them. You have to tip your hat. We deserve it, for accepting their reality that they imposed on us.

I buy peak oil, so it's not just this sunday, in this country. It's demand from the entire globe. Driving, building, eating, entertaining, storing, war, whatever.

those old supply and demand curves are still in effect.

Besides Peak Oil, there is more international demand for oil-- not just as fuel but as chemical feedstocks. There is little ability to pump or refine more oil, ergo the price goes up.

Bringing back decent CAFE standards and reclassifying Escalades and Range Rovers as luxury cars, not delivery trucks, would help.
