Says Prof. Cole on his always informative blog
.

Those with strong stomachs may wish to see some photographs of the real situation in Iraq, photographs that American news outlets systematically refuse to print. Warning: they are often graphic. It should be noted that these sorts of scenes are shown on Arab satellite television all the time. For the past 3 years, American audiences have seen a sanitized Iraq, whereas the rest of the world has seen the real thing. When CNN interviewed Iraqi foreign minister Barham Salih recently, they showed him with a peaceful Baghdad backdrop. But in fact, Salih could not have so much as taken a stroll in West Baghdad without being immediately shot down dead

1. So then why do you enable them by calling them "mainstream"??
They're not "the MSM." They're the Corporate Media.

7. I enabled it?!? Well, for cryeye, I'll stop today.

If I don't call it "mainstream", then they'll start reporting real news, right?

Okay, done. Turning on CNN right now to see what Corporate Media is reporting. Something about a cat in a wall.

9. The "mainstream" is definitely corporate.
Edited on Sat Apr-15-06 01:26 PM by Divernan
Definition of "mainstream" is "the prevailing trend in opinion, fashion, etc. An alternate definition is "the principal current of a river."

No one enables the corporate media when accurately describing it as mainstream. In this country the major news outlets, whether print or broadcast, are corporate media which have drastically cut back on news coverage and focus on entertaining their readers/viewers to boost advertising and profits.

In the river of information in the U.S., the mainstream is grossly polluted, tainted, and sluggish, as compared to media in most other countries of the world.

3. This has been going on since day one of the Iraqi invasion...
and probably has always been going on when it comes to the role of the US in the overthrow of established governments around the world.

5. Parents, sit your 12 yrs. & older kids down to see these.

THESE are the pictures of war, not the glossy slick photos we see in the National Guard promotional films at the local cineplex, with the clean as a whistle uniforms and high tech equipment. Some DUers will post that their sons or daughters, neices or nephews are in Iraq, or will shortly be sent there (or to Afghanistan). They bemoan the fact that these young people will be at great risk, but say, what could we do? They were 18 or 20 and made up their own minds; or wanted to get tuition to go to college.

Well, young people make up their minds based on the information they possess. Are you going to let Rumsfeld's slick PR machine and lying recruiters be the sole source of your children's knowledge of war in general and this clusterfuck in Iraq in particular? IT IS UP TO THOSE WHO LOVE THEM to educate them about the horrors of war, and the meaning of the term cannon fodder, and that loving your country and being a patriot means demanding that your leaders NOT take away our constitutional rights, and NOT start a pre-emptive "war" (slaughter) of a defenseless country to get control of oil reserves for the uber-rich elite. If your kid says they want to earn the money for tuition, tell them that they're not going to get an honorary posthumous degree carved into their tombstone, and that the severe wounds suffered by tens of thousands of soldiers will condemn them to a life in rehab or a wheelchair and there will be no time spent on college campuses.

Have them read Max Clelland's book to learn what it really can mean to be severely wounded. Granted that Max has lead an admirable life, but he has endured daily physical and emotional pain that has driven many similarly wounded vets to suicide or drug addiction.

Tell them that they can live at home and work full time to save money for tuition; or that you'll refinance your house and they can pay you back later; or that they can get the first two years at the local community college, or go part time. Tell them war is not a video game and you didn't raise them to slaughter women and children because they were following orders. Tell them about depleted uranium and white phosphorous and agent orange and the early deaths or lifetimes of illnesses and genetic damage and babies born with birth defects.

As to the original post in this thread, it is absolutely true that the rest of the world sees these photos and even more powerful videos of the carnage, on their nightly news. I was in Istanbul last December, and had access to cable channels from all over the world - they all included coverage of the fighting and the dead and dying - just the way we used to see Vietnam covered when we had journalists who weren't corporate shills.

6. Media ideology trumps journalistic principle
Read the rest here

The media sanitizes the far-left segment of the anti-war movement

ChronWatch has noted on many occasions that most of the MSM seek out any thread of a story that may lead to Bush bashing. As a result, standards of journalistic integrity have gone right out the window. In the old days of balanced journalism (can you remember that far back?) reporters felt obligated to present information on the parties to a story that revealed their true identity as opposed to the presumed one. Questions were asked about their hidden agenda, if any. Nowadays, media ideology trumps journalistic principle. If there is an apparent ideological match, that’s all that counts.

In the S.F. Chronicle’s anti-war protest coverage Joe Garofoli leads us to believe that the protesters are Volvo-driving Moms who pass through the Starbuck’s drive-through for a double latte after soccer practice on their way to the protest. According to Joe, the protest event is a composite of such decent people out to actively express their opinion.

It takes our friend, the Zombie, to uncover this journalistic farce, as in the most recent story by him as presented in ChronWatch In the Zombie’s photos we see the facts that Joe fails to uncover, intrepid journalist that he is. Many of the protesters have a different agenda that is far, far left and distinctly anti-American. They throw their lot in with the anti-war protesters since the protest event also furthers their goal of making capitalism, America, and Bush all look bad. In truth, they are against the war because it is being fought against their friends and allies, who are our enemies. The soccer Moms are being used by these far left groups, and dear ole’ Joe allows it to pass unreported.

The media uses that same approach for Cindy Sheehan, super darling of the anti-war movement. Cindy has been relatively quiet lately, but the S.F. Chron feels obligated to keep her out front in the news as shown in this recent article by Vicki Haddeck, “Cindy Sheehan’s Year of Living Famously.” Vicki reports:

Cindy Sheehan, who occasionally has traveled with a bodyguard, tends to dismiss personal criticism by saying "They've taken my son -- what worse could they do to me?

8. I get no response when I click on your link.
Anyway, I don't understand what your point is. The OP says the media sanitizes war reporting to make it more acceptable to people in the U.S. The excerpt that you copy says that the media sanitizes reporting of anti-war efforts to make them more acceptable to people in the U.S. Maybe both are true. What are you trying to communicate by posting this?
