If Bush Goes Into Iran Will this Country Explode with Anger?
I just don't think another macho military action will be tolerated. I think Bush and his guys will just get run out of town on a rail. And that would probably be a good and just thing.

He stands up there and claims "all this talk about Iran is just wild speculation." And then all the papers are just full of it - and a general saying we already have military action going on in Iran.

This is just sickening to me.

I just want to see this whole gross, corrupt adm. out - everyone of them. And if they were arrested for their crims against humanity I would like that even better.

3. I don't think so.
I think people have had enough of this insanity. Most people would like to just get back to living a normal life.

34. Sadly, the number is closer to 50%
Although support for the war in Iraq is down to about one third, recent polls suggest that more than half of Americans support a new war against Iran! How can they favor starting a new war even as their support for the last one is declining? The declining support for the war in Iraq is not a rejection of war, but a rejection of losing wars. Americans are perfectly fond of war as long as they’re winning. In any case, there seems to be ample support from the American public for a new war against Iran if you consider 50% to be a mandate.

2. I think that plus the rising gas prices
and some of the scandals are finally getting to people. My boss came into the office yesterday and asked me why Bush hadn't been impeached yet. He's an ex-jock (high school football) who still coaches kid's sports teams, etc. He's not that political-yet he hates Bush. Whether he'd ever take to the streets in protest---of that, I don't know.

and not enough gas to take him hither. We'll all be in the streets soon!

16. yeah, bread and circuses
Even if Bush orders Iran to be nuked, most Americans will probably be too distracted to care. Our political system is brokem-- this is why so many of my progressive friends have lately been taking language courses and immigrating to Europe. Note-- you still *can* vote in US elections after immigrating, but you don't have to be a part of the military-industrial monstrosity brutalizing the world anymore.

8. I disagree. I think people are up to here with all of this stuff
and if they dare to start another stupid, expensive war in the middle east I think people will go nuts. And I live in the Bible Belt. If people here are getting sick to death of all this stuff then it is twice as bad other places.

But even if people care at this point, what can be done?
There will no impeachment, Bush has still got plenty of time
to blow up the planet.

Too late we get smart.....

10. Can't be sure. Five-plus years of abuse may have neutralized much
of the populace. And the cumulative cynicism impairs a rush to arms and to the streets. Interestingly, I believe that you would see some action if STUFF WERE TAKEN AWAY, like repossession of vehicles, furniture, flat-screen TVs, home foreclosures, food shortages in supermarkets, gas shortages (lines for miles like the 70s and/or sales on odd-even days).
That's when you'll get the asses of the masses in the streets in American 2006.

19. I don't think they would explode with anger, but I do think many would be
quaking in fear.

There are still a whole lot of folks trying to keep cognitive dissonance away, in terms of viewing this administration as just like politics/govt as usual. Be it the Leak-the-SPy story, the FISA story, the signing statements... Still trying to accept any spin - not because they like bush (many no longer due - poll numbers show that) - but because to recognize that something more serious (per dismanteling our govt/constitutional system) is just too frightening to contemplate.

If bush goes into Iran - esp if they do it outside of congress (as in - just start acting and claim the right to do so is covered under previous votes of congress) - I think there a huge swath of folks still in denial would wake up in a second. And be exceptionally alarmed/frightened.

Take to the streets? As a society, we just don't tend to respond that way - not sure why, but we don't. I think the population believes that the way to change is through elections. Only way I could see that happen would be if Bushco went into Iran - outside of Congress - and then - elections were either cancelled or so blatantly fixed... those circumstances, imo, would bring people out into the streets.

21. Nope. Erect bogeyman. Wave Flag. "Support the Troops". Never fails.
They'll be showing exciting videos of "smart bombs" blowing up buildings, tanks, etc. Followed by generals in camouflage (even tho' they're in D.C.) telling us all about the success of the missions, grim faced politicians calling for "unity", with plenty of flags in the background.

They'll give the massacre a fancy name like "Operation Newkular Free" and the MSM will glamorize it with interviews of the girlfriends of the "heroic" pilots.

Works every time.

I was just with a republican relative who said to me that she's TERRIFIED about Iran getting the bomb. What can we do?? she kept saying -- implying that we should take them out ASAP.

Wow. I was speechless. I wish I'd had my DU talking points, but I was a little woozy from all the Easter candy.

33. Murkans obey the teevee
The "media" will conduct an all out propaganda blitz, telling the willfully ignorant what a great leader the little dictator is, telling them what a danger Iran is to our freedom (!), and insisting that anyone who thinks otherwise is unpatriotic. The blitz will be complete with accompanying martial/patriotic music playing incessantly in the background, sound byte slogans, and continual flag waving. The willfully ignorant will fall for it hook, line and sucker...er, sinker.

35. No, the reagan dems and Bu$h's core will remember the Iran hostages
Edited on Sun Apr-16-06 07:24 PM by Jose Diablo
They're already making moves to label Iran as supporting terrorists and having nukes. Congress will give Bu$h a pass on Iran as some of the Dems will become turncoats as always. Not only that, but what politician can afford to be labeled as against fighting terrorists in an election year. Look at Max Cleland. The Dems will keep their heads down as usual. How many have supported Sheehan? The Repubs will vote lockstep like the little fascists they are. During Vietnam, Congress didn't do squat. Forget party lines, there are as many hawks in the Dem party as there always have been. Thats why the Repubs were allowed to walk right in.

Even the people, we're brought-up to make war. Look at all the marching bands and saluting the flag during sports events. The cowboy and indian movies, cops and robbers, the getting off on violence. Folks, we have to face the facts, we are a warrior nation. We've been like this as long as I can remember. And from reading our history, it's all about war. Always has been, right from the beginning.
Hell, the people worship the country like it is some kinda god.

If Bu$h decides to go into Iran, ain't nobody gonna stop him.

And if we think we're gonna take the house this election, you got another think coming. It doesn't matter what the polls say about Bu$h or even what people vote. The repubs are in and will stay in.

Were on a long slide into fascism and it won't stop until these guys have gutted everything and moved all the jobs off-shore. We are screwed.

There ain't gonna be any general strikes either. It just won't happen.

The only advice I can suggest for Iran is get your lead-lined underwear out. Even the leaders in Iran want war as it will put the fundamentalist muslims in firm control throughout the muslim world. So what if they get the crap bombed out of Iran, you can bet the House of Saud will be coming down soon as the fundamentalists there and everywhere unite all to the cause against the great 'Santan'. Israel better bend down and kiss their ass goodbye, because they are history too.

Edit: The f*cking fundies on the right want a holy war? They are gonna get it, in spades. Dig-in, it's gonna be a long night.

37. I wish 'twere so.
It is core to the nature of the corruption in our body politic that such is impossible for me to expect. If we, as a nation, were even capable of having a national strike or 'explosion' of anger, taking to the streets in the millions and millions in protest, then we wouldn't have the corruption we have. It'd be a unmistakable symptom of a cure - not the illness we have and not even just the beginnings of health. It'd be what I want for us - at all times.
