The Winds of Change: Climate, Weather, and the Destruction of Civilizations
Eugene Linden

Eugene Linden argues that climate change has played a largely unconsidered role in the destruction of past civilizations and that it should be considered seriously when we talk about national security today. Mr. Linden also discusses the latest findings by scientists on the subject of global warming and talks about what the fallout might be if the problem is not addressed. The talk was hosted by Politics and Prose in Washington, DC. Mr. Linden answers questions from the audience following his remarks.

Eugene Linden's work has appeared in Time, Foreign Affairs, and Smithsonian magazine. He is the author of "The Octopus and the Orangutan," "The Parrot's Lament," and several other books. For more information on Mr. Linden and his work, visit eugenelinden.com.

3. Planet's Not Going Anywhere
Just us, and a large population of animals, and fish.

The planet will adapt, and change as it has for billions and billions of years.

2. All these doomsayers should contribute some of the profits of their
books to election reform groups in the United States. Rightwing Bushite corporations owning and controlling the 'TRADE SECRET,' PROPRIETARY programming code by which all our votes are "counted," with virtually no audit/recount controls, IS the problem.

Solve that problem in the United States, and you BEGIN solving the problem of the destruction of the planet for short term profit by U.S.-based global corporate predators.

Congressional bills:

Russ Holt's HR 550 requires a real paper ballot, bans secret software in "voting machines", and has more than 170 co-sponsors, but the audit required is too weak, it promotes electronic voting and centralized power, and the secret software might be permitted to continue in the central tabulators (the bill is not clear). To sign the HR 550 petition: http://www.rushholt.com/petition.html
At lot of discussion at DU of the loopholes/pitfalls in HR 550:

(Note: Senate Bill-SB 330 and House-HR704 simply require a "voter verified paper audit trail" (VVPAT), which may be best for the moment.)

Also of interest:

Bob Koehler (-- four recent election reform initiatives in Ohio, predicted to win by 60/40 votes, flipped over, on election day, into 60/40 LOSSES!--the biggest flipover we've seen yet; the election theft machines and their masters are now dictating election policy!)

8. I don't know if we are like other civilizations...
We have such advanced technology, and such an ability to scrape together resources, I actually doubt to some degree if this civ. could die because of the environment. We have the ability to survive in a vacuum. The environment can't get much worse than that.
