Abortion, prayer in schools, flag-burning, same-sex marriage, etc...Hot button issues for their side. What's the best strategy to counter them? Just ignore them and talk about debt and deficits, a failed war fought over lies, and total incompetence? Everytime they bring up one of their issues , we bring up what they don't want to talk about?

1. I doubt if they could get anyone excited over flag-burning
and abortion and all their usual hot-button issues, unless they can somehow tie them to the high cost of gas. Even their base has other things on their minds at this point.

3. We Can't Let Them Define the Issues
Which means our candidates need to avoid getting baited into defending indefensible positions about "values" issues. Our candidates also need to find a voice to speak about OUR issues -- a sane exit strategy in Iraq, health care, Katrinia re-building, rebuilding the wage economy, and alternate fuels.

These issues are fundamentally appealing to working people all over the country. We have to avoid being sucked into "morals" and "body fluids" issues, because the Pubs know how to demagogue those.

people aren't gonna be fooled by their wedge issues anymore, except for that 12% or so of his base.

It's a safe bet that they're not running on that. But the dems definitely should.

9. They will whip up the base
by warning them that if Democrats take over Congress it will be non-stop investigations of Iraq, Bush will be impeached and Hillary will ride her broomstick over Washington laughing maniacally.

If it wasn't for Hillary, the RNC wouldn't have anything to write about in their fundraising letters -- other than Ted Kennedy.

10. Taxes
Here's the latest National Republican Senatorial Committee's latest solicitation:

Elizabeth Dole
Chair, NRSC

It's that time of year again-tax day. And while tax day is never pleasant, it has been made a little easier by the Republican tax relief packages enacted since President Bush took office.

In recognition of tax day and of the fight to lower your taxes, the NRSC has launched a new website:
http://www.DonkeysWantYourMoney.com. The site highlights the tax-hiking records of Democrat Senate candidates across the country and includes information on the benefits of making President Bush's tax cuts permanent.

As you'll see on the web page, if the Democrats have their
way, President Bush's tax cuts will never be made permanent, and in fact, your taxes will increase!

Democrats are blocking every effort to make the Bush tax cuts permanent - in effect, locking in a future tax hike. They claim that you support their position. Is this true?

President Bush and our Republican leadership want to ensure America's tax policies help taxpayers thrive and ensure that our nation's economy remains the most prosperous in the world.

In the last five years, the tax relief has left $880 billion in the hands of American workers, investors, small businesses, and families - who have used it to help produce more than four years of economic growth and one of the lowest unemployment rates in years - 4.7%!

Yet this essential tax relief will expire in the next few years. If that happens, you and other hardworking Americans will face a massive tax increase.

Despite the success of the Bush tax cuts, pessimistic, out-of-touch liberals refuse to accept that tax relief has stimulated our economy, and created jobs-and they'll do whatever it takes to retake control of Congress and do away with the cuts.

That's why I must have your help at once.

I need you to help me make it clear to the obstructionist Democrats and their willing allies in the media - that the majority of Americans favor a plan to solidify tax cuts, reform the tax code and reign in government spending.

:wtf: DonkeysWantYourMoney.com

It's about as formulaic as the most generic TV sitcom.

Oh and let's not forget the Bush strategy of boiling elections down to a worship of money.

16. They've already said....."social" issues.
all of the things you mentioned. The things that don't make a god-damned bit of difference if the political direction of this country isn't reversed. Of course these are red-meat issues for the fundies, who cares if Bush gets us into WWIII as long has gay people can't get married, right? :grr: The rapture is coming soon so it won't matter if we destroy the planet. :banghead: So the Repigs will have great success....again....convincing these fucking morons to vote for them. After all, they're the party that is the moral backbone of our country, right? :puke:
