BitTorrent battles over bandwidth
This is where BitTorrent comes in. It is an incredibly efficient way of distributing large files, like video, across the net, even when there is a high demand, and even when only one person has the complete file.

The key is that a user's computer does not need to wait until it has downloaded the entire file.

As soon as it has downloaded a chunk, it starts uploading it to any other users who do not yet have that chunk.

snip

As network providers look for smarter ways to identify torrent traffic, and reduce its impact on their network, more and more help sites are springing up showing users how to encrypt their data to avoid it being tracked and controlled.

They have every reason to fear it.

2. I use bittorrent to download live music from taper-friendly bands
like the Dead-- and it's great.

etree is an excellent resource:

Also, Firefox now has a bittorrent search plugin you can add to your search window. Too cool.

10. Might I suggest µTorrent?
All of the functionality of Azureus, not nearly as much of the resource usage.

7. ISP's can't do squat about Torrent unless illegal files are
being transferred. Hence the help sites for encrypting. I think Bit Torrent is a brilliant piece of software, and I used to use it when it first popped up. There were too many issues though, lots of incompletes, slow speeds and too easy to track your IP. Yes I know there are ways around that but why should I bother. For 15 bucks a month I can get a private newsgroup service that has everything you can get with Bit Torrent and a whole lot more. I never get any incompletes, the service guarantees my privacy and the speeds are nothing short of astounding. We're talking 6 megs per second with a cable connection. I've been downloading stuff since before the internet, back in the BBS days. Most people I know who have been into it for a long time have gone to newsgroups, they consider things like Bit Torrent, and P2P's like Limewire and EDonkey to be the domain of amateurs.
