Does anyone remember the name of the State Dept. man suicided in 2003??
I am hoping someone will remember his name and the timing. I was reading an article by Leopold just now and he came to mind. I want to try to figure out what it was he knew or who he was talking to that was so bad for his health. Remember he "jumped" out the window at the State Dept. at 5:00 in the afternoon without his shoes or jacket, and it was immediately ruled a suicide.

If you can help with a name and approximate month I would surely appreciate it.

Thanks.

1. I remember the incident.
His wife, also a government employee, was waiting for him in the car at the end of the workday. That's how I remember it. He wasn't very old.

I'll keep thinking about it. Maybe I'll remember his name.

Is that the man you are looking for?

John J. Kokal, 58, was found dead in the late afternoon of November 7. Police indicated he may have jumped from the roof of the State Department. Kokal's body was found at the bottom of a 20 foot window well, 8 floors below the roof of the State Department headquarters near the 23rd and D Street location.

I am going to go read the article. Interesting that it was just a few days after the CIA sent the referal to justice for the Plame outing. I remember reading a while back that his security clearance had been taken away before he died.

I can't help but suspect he had something to do with the workup on Plame. Bolton was on his ass. I wondered if he has been questioned yet by the Fed's before his demise. Or if someone didn't want anyone talking to him.

On Edit: I have this feeling that Kokal has a part in this. What that may be, I don't know. Wonder if Fitz is working a murder case as part of his broader investigation.

8. The article says the police 'have not ruled out homicide'
Kokal's INR bureau was at the forefront of confronting claims that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction. Washington police have not ruled out homicide as the cause of his death. Kokal was not wearing either a jacket or shoes when his body was found. He lived in Arlington, Virginia.

Just like Dr. Kelly! Suicide or suicided? Bolton didn't like him, Wurmser didn't like him either. Looks like he wasn't going along with the program.

Also mentioned was Judith Miller, the New York Times reporter to whom Dr Kelly sent his mysterious "dark actors" email shortly before his death.

http://politics.guardian.co.uk/kelly/story/0,,1050114,00.html
He referred to one of Dr Kelly's last emails in which he spoke of "many dark actors playing games".

Mr Dingemans also referred to the relatively narrow terms of the Hutton inquiry, limited to the circumstances leading up to Dr Kelly's death. He suggested wider issues the inquiry had thrown up should be investigated by "other institutions".

Some have suggested Dr Kelly was an unworldly scientist led on by the
reporters, but he was used to dealing with the media. He was not simply one
expert among many on Iraq's weapons programmes: in his field - biological
weapons - he was the expert. Although he did not seek them out, journalists
came to him over the years whenever they wanted to make sure they had the
details right on the efforts of the United Nations weapons inspectors to
root out Iraqi WMD.

Among them was Judith Miller of the New York Times, the paper's WMD expert
and the recipient of an e-mail on the day Dr Kelly died, in which he spoke
of "dark actors playing games". In Germ, the 1998 book she co-wrote, she is
fulsome in her praise for him as part of the "Gang of Four", the senior
inspectors who forced so many admissions about WMD out of the Iraqis in the
mid-1990s. More than anyone else, Dr Kelly was instrumental in getting the
regime to admit the existence of its biological weapons programme.

10. Dr. David Kelly, bio-weapons expert also "suicided" in 2003
November 20, 2003 (FTW), WASHINGTON -- In a case eerily reminiscent of the death of British Ministry of Defense bio-weapons expert, Dr. David Kelly, an official of the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research Near East and South Asian division (INR/NESA), John J. Kokal, 58, was found dead in the late afternoon of November 7. Police indicated he may have jumped from the roof of the State Department. Kokal's body was found at the bottom of a 20 foot window well, 8 floors below the roof of the State Department headquarters near the 23rd and D Street location. Kokal's death was briefly mentioned in a FOX News website story on November 8 but has been virtually overlooked by the major media.

Interestingly, the FOX report states that State Department officials confirmed Kokal's death to The Washington Post yet the Post - according to an archive search - has published nothing at all about Kokal's death. A subsequent search revealed that the Post had made a short three-paragraph entry the death in the Metro section on November 7, 2003. However, the Post entry stated that Kokal did not work in intelligence and the story does not show up in the archives.

Kokal's INR bureau was at the forefront of confronting claims that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction. Washington police have not ruled out homicide as the cause of his death. Kokal was not wearing either a jacket or shoes when his body was found. He lived in Arlington, Virginia.

However, a colleague of Kokal's told this writer that the Iraq analyst was despondent over "problems" with his security clearance. Kokal reportedly climbed out of a window and threw himself out in such a manner so that he would "land on his head." At the time Kokal fell from either the roof or a window, his wife Pamela, a public affairs specialist in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, was waiting for him in the parking garage. Mrs. Kokal had previously worked in Consular Affairs where she was involved in the stricter vetting of visa applicants from mainly Muslim countries after the Sept. 11 attacks.

16. I sent an email to Jason Leopold about Kokar
If anyone has the inside dope about Kokar and on what he was working on or who he was talking to (wiretaps...anyone?) I am thinking that Jason is on it. Also I wonder if Kokal was among st the first to be interviewed by the feds about Plame and/or Brewster Jennings, or was relatively close to his appointment.

Then again his phones could have been wire-tapped and they knew he was passing information, a little to and fro, and or talking to people that were considered "threats".

Of course this is all speculation. But the players, the INR, Bolton, the timing is raising a stench from my keyboard.

If anyone wants to weigh in, I would appreciate the discussion.

Your could even speak to me on double-super-duper-secret back-round.

But somebody please....whilst I await my response from Leopold...share your thoughts, theories, and delusions with me. I have had too much coffee and feel like kicking it here for a bit.

19. Well, I did a little googling and found out that John Kokal's colleague,
Edited on Mon Apr-17-06 03:25 AM by Catrina
INR officer, Greg Thielmann had spoken out against how the 'evidence' was being twisted by the neocons.

Another target was former State Department Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR) officer Greg Thielmann who spoke about how intelligence was skewed by the neo-cons.

It is not known whether Thielmann's colleague at INR, John Kokal, also voiced concerns about similar issues. We will never know, because tragically, Kokal's shoeless body was discovered in a 20 feet window well, 8 floors below the top of the State Department building early in the evening of November 7th. Contrary to what the State Department said about Kokal, senior State Department sources report that not only was the diplomat a top Iraq specialist, he regularly briefed Secretary of State Colin Powell. The Kokal incident is too reminiscent of the alleged suicide of British Ministry of Defense weapons of mass destruction expert, Dr. David Kelly (who is said to have committed suicide with a dull pen knife and over the counter drugs). Kokal was the first foreign affairs official found dead at the bottom of a foreign ministry since Czechoslovak Foreign Minister Jan Masaryk's body was found in the courtyard below his window in 1948. Masaryk's defenestration preceded the total Communist takeover of Czechoslovakia.

........

Because just as the Kokal matter was fading into oblivion, the United Nations headquarters reported that on December 1, an American, Michael Holton, a 16-year veteran of its security police, was found shot to death inside the UN headquarters in New York. It was the first incident of its kind in the history of the UN. The head of the UN security department said there was "no prior indication of psychological problems and that no note was left near the body . . . there were no witnesses and no one was known to have heard anything unusual." Yes, there's a lot of that happening as of late.

http://www.fromthewilderness.com/free/ww3/120503_rove.html

It seems that Greg Thielman has been very outspoken against the WH. He has spoken to Jason Leopold, Sydney Blumenthal and Sy Hersch. So to the poster who emailed Jason Leopold, I think that's a good idea. Thielman was smeared by the WH!

Greg Thielman, a former director at the State Department who was assigned to Bolton and entrusted with providing the former under secretary of state with intelligence information, told New Yorker

www.truthout.org/docs_2006/022406J.shtml

Greg Thielman, chief of INR at the time, told me: "What everyone in the intelligence community knew was that the White House couldn't care less about any kind of information that there were no WMD or that the U.N. inspectors were very effective. Everyone knew the White House was deaf to that input. It was worse than pressure; they didn't care."

http://www.thinkingpeace.com/pages/Articles/arts143.html

I'd like to know what Greg Thielman thinks about his colleague's 'suicide'! Maybe Jason Leopold or Sy Hersch could ask him?

Body Is Found Inside U.N. Headquarters

NEW YORK (AP)--A body was found inside United Nations headquarters on Monday, a U.N. spokesman said. U.N. security and the New York police department are investigating the matter.

The U.N. spokesman said the person had been shot, and that the body was discovered inside the building's third-floor lounge at about 11:30 a.m. He declined to give any details on the deceased person pending notification of the family.

The spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the world body considered the shooting an ``isolated incident.''

Gus W. Weiss, 72, a former White House policy adviser on technology, intelligence, and economic affairs, died Nov. 25 of a fall from the Watergate East residential building in the District. The D.C. medical examiner ruled his death a suicide.

31. Beyond a Resonable Doubt: The footprints in the sand
I once heard the 'footprints in the sand' story to describe to a murder trial jury how one defines beyond a resonable doubt. It's that you are stranded on a deserted island. After several days, you are walking on the beach and see footprints in the sand. There's no other indications that anyone else is on the island with you. No footprints are seen anywhere else and several days pass when, again, footprints are on the beach. You still have not actually seen another individual. And yet, the footprints appear. This evidence makes it beyond a reasonable doubt you are not alone.

That's what the "suicides" are like. Too many 'coincidences' to be dismissed as single flukes.

23. It was odd, that month
c&p
On November 25, former National Security Council official Dr. Gus W. Weiss, a known critic of the Bush administration’s war in Iraq, was found dead outside a service entrance to Washington’s Watergate East residential building where he lived. Police ruled that Weiss had committed suicide by jumping from the roof of the Watergate building. Weiss was a former Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space policy under President Jimmy Carter and served on the Signals Intelligence Committee of President Carter’s Intelligence Board. Weiss also served as an adviser to the CIA and as a member of the Defense Science Board. Weiss was awarded the French Legion of Honor in 1975. In a manner reminiscent of The Washington Post’s handling of the suspicious automobile crushing death of Marvin Bush’s babysitter on September 29, the paper waited until December 7 to report Weiss’s suspicious death. In the case of Marvin Bush’s babysitter, Bertha Champagne, the Post did not report the incident until
October 5.

32. Wow ~ those are very interesting threads ~
Check this out. The day after Kokal died, Nov. 8th, Frist shut down the Committee investigation pre-war intelligence on Iraq!! The very next day!

Frist Freezes Senate Probe of Prewar Iraq Data

By Walter Pincus and Dana Priest

Washington Post

Saturday, November 8, 2003; Page A18

Angry about a leaked Democratic memo, the Republican leadership of the Senate yesterday took the unusual step of canceling all business of the committee investigating prewar intelligence on Iraq.

Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) called on the author of the memo -- which laid out a possible Democratic strategy to extend the investigation to include the White House and executive branch -- to "identify himself or herself . . . disavow this partisan attack in its entirety" and deliver "a personal apology" to Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.), chairman of the Select Committee on Intelligence.

I think that's from the first or second link ~ the fear was palpable back then. This was at the time that the investigation was ongoing, but Ashcroft was still in charge. I wonder if Kokal's death motivated people to demand that Ashcroft recuse himself? He finally did and on Dec. 30 or 31, Patrick Fitzgerald was assigned as the Special Prosecutor. He immediately started handing out subpoenas.

I remember the judge who finally agreed to send Judith Miller to jail, after seeing Fitzgerald's documents supporting his reasoning as to why he needed her testimony saying:

'This is a crime of such magnitude' ~ he went to say that he would forego his normal reticence to force a reporter to reveal his/her sources. I wonder what Fitzgerald showed him?

There was also the CIA damage assessment after the leak of Brewster/Jennings and Valerie Plame's ID. We never saw that, but it's possible that people died as a result of the leak. Could Fitz have had that info and could he have shown it to the judge?

'A crime of such magnitude'? Treason, maybe? Or maybe Fitz had info from witnesses about the death of John Kokal, which had occurred less than two months before his appointment.

in the real world..people like these men do not die of questionable means and disappear into oblivion..

i just have to in my heart believe that..if i can not believe that..i may as well just give up...its really how i feel..

i have fought for the truth since my co-workers died on 9/11...i will never give up that fight ..but when this is so obvious and it touches close to the Plame case..if Fitz is not looking inot these deaths..well what do we as a nation stand for??..i just do not know any longer..

this isn't tin foil hat crap..these people were involved in national security ..in intelligence..and possibly involved in intelligence of this war...

and their deaths were kept almost silent..

since when does the death of anyone at the UN by gun shot not make the new york news??..since when is it not national news 24/7..it was kept almost silent..that
alone speaks volumns!

dang it..if any of the FITZ people read this..look into this..its imperative!

any real reporters get on this ..i know its frightening..but these dots need connecting!

and thanks seemslikeadream for staying on this ..and a hello to you!!:hi: :hi:

and a

43. The 'Techtonic Plates' may finally have started to shift. I read that
the original memo, which is dated in Jan. of 2003 which states that the Niger/Uranium 'sixteen words' was a lie. We knew that, but we didn't know for sure when the WH had this information.

In the article I read, (I think it's up on Truthout now, sorry I don't have a link) it said that the INR had stated that the documents were most likely forged.

John K. Kokal was an INR officer. Greg Thielman was INR Chief and has over and over stated outright, that the information was false. Thielman and Kokal were colleagues.

In one of the articles in this thread, it stated that Kokal was 'despondent about his security clearance'. I haven't yet read anything about him being outspoken about the info being false, but it seems his colleagues at the INR were being a real problem for Bush/Cheney.

Cheney et al, were keeping those who would not give them the info they wanted, out of the loop. Maybe he was threatened with having his security clearance removed and he knew they were lying to the American people.

I agree with you, Flyarm, these men, John Kokal and Gus Weiss (who also 'suicided' outside the Watergate complex), Dr. Kelly and the UN Security Guard, are dead and may have been murdered. I really hope there is someone trying to find out what happened to them. I have a feeling their colleagues did not 'get over it'.

They staked everything on their forgeries (I hope that meeting in Rome with Ledeen, Larry Franklin et al, is further investigated) and their lies about Iraq's WMD and people were challenging them.

All three of these men, Kokal, Weiss and Dr. Kelly challenged their lies and all three are dead!! Someone needs to pay some more attention to this!

Maybe Josh Marshall is aware of these 'coincidences'? They would certainly contribute to a 'techtonic shift' if they turned out to be murder.

25. John J. Kokal, 58
an official of the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research Near East and South Asian division (INR/NESA), John J.

34. Re: Kokal, from the Bushevik-CIA Assassination Manual
http://www.frankolsonproject.org/Documents/Assassination%20Manual.html

The most efficient accident, in simple assassination, is a fall of 75 feet or more onto a hard surface. Elevator shafts, stair wells, unscreened windows and bridges will serve. Bridge falls into water are not reliable. In simple cases a private meeting with the subject may be arranged at a properly-cased location. The act may be executed by sudden, vigorous of the ankles, tipping the subject over the edge. If the assassin immediately sets up an outcry, playing the “horrified witness”, no alibi or surreptitious withdrawal is necessary. In chase cases it will usually be necessary to stun or drug the subject before dropping him. Care is required to insure that no wound or condition not attributable to the fall is discernible after death.

37. Not bolton, but,
bolton with some muscle men enforcers. Those are the people we need to be looking for, the foot soldiers who would do the actual deed.

38. Yes, and I just learned in this thread that there was a second 'suicide'
that month, Weiss also a critic of the pre-war intelligence was found dead later in November. Has anyone who agreed with Bush commit suicide?

I think these deaths probably silenced a lot of others, for a while. But the more who speak out now, the less liklihood of more deaths. They can't kill everyone. I have a feeling a lot of what is happening has been in the works for quite a while. These men had friends and family. I doubt they have forgotten.

I haven't been able to find anything on a final conclusion after the investigation. One of the first articles said the police had not 'ruled out murder'. So, have they ruled it out yet?

40. Wasn't Bolton (or some other neocon)
quoted as threatening to throw someone out a window if they didn't (x, y z)? Sometime in 2003 prior to these deaths.

Maybe I dreamed it.

48. PLEASE READ..AND SEE CONNECTIONS OF FORD & KOKAL
now look at this...........see :

Kokal's former boss, the recently retired chief of INR, Carl W. Ford,

AFTER FIRST ARTICLE GO READ THE SECOND ONE POSTED FROM YESTERDAY TRUTHOUT (the bottom article i am posting)......

this article is about Kokals death , dated November 20, 2003 FROM THE WILDERNESS..

http://www.fromthewilderness.com/cgi-bin/MasterPFP.cgi?doc=http://www.fromthewilderness.com/free/ww3/112003_kokal.html

State Department officials dispute official State Department communiqués that said Kokal was not an analyst at INR. People who know Kokal told the French publication Geopolitique that Kokal was involved in the analysis of intelligence about Iraq prior to and during the war against Saddam Hussein.

Another INR official, weapons expert Greg Thielmann, said he and INR were largely ignored by Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security John Bolton and his deputy, David Wurmser, a pro-Likud neo-conservative who recently became Vice President Dick Cheney's Middle East adviser. Kokal's former boss, the recently retired chief of INR,

***** Carl W. Ford, ****recently said that Bolton often exaggerated information to steer people in the wrong directions.

State Department Memo: '16 Words' Were False
By Jason Leopold
t r u t h o u t | Report
Monday 17 April 2006

see digitialized memo here:
http://truthout.org/imgs.art_01/fordmemo.pdf

snip:****
The memo was drafted by

******Carl Ford Jr.*****, the former head of the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research, in response to questions posed in June 2003 by I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney's former chief of staff, about a February 2002 fact-finding trip to Niger that former Ambassador Joseph Wilson undertook to investigate the uranium claims on behalf of the CIA.

snip:

Powell requested further information from his aides.******Ford ****went back and retrieved the June memo, re-dated it July 7, 2003, and sent it to Powell's deputy, Richard Armitage.

The Sun reported that the memo contained no direct reference to Plame Wilson's CIA status being marked as "secret" despite the fact that the word "secret" is clearly marked on every page of the INR memo.

The memo does not say that the State Department alerted the White House on January 12, 2003, about the bogus uranium claims.

snip:

But the memo's author,**** Carl Ford,***** said in a previous interview that he has no doubt the State Department's reservations about the Niger intelligence made its way to President Bush, Vice President Cheney, and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.

49. So Carl Ford and GregThielmann, both colleagues of John J. Kokal
Edited on Tue Apr-18-06 11:13 PM by Catrina
were saying that the Niger claims were most likely false, the last thing Cheney et al wanted to hear, especially after Joe Wilson wrote his op ed!

And people who knew John Kokal say he was working on the pre-war intelligence. Why would the official statements deny that?

I really hope this gets revived and properly investigated. I would love to know what Thielman and Ford think of Kokal's 'suicide'.

I was trying to remember what was happening in November of 2003. I know there was a demand for Ashcroft to recuse himself from the investigation ~ he finally did that at the end of December and on Dec. 31st, his acting ATT. Gen. appointed Patrick Fitzgerald as Special prosecutor.

The other very suspicious event was the 'suicide' of Gus Weiss, another critic of the administration's pre-war intelligence. I meant to look him up and find out more about his death.

And the UN death. This seems to be a story that under normal circumstances, the press would have been all over, not silent about as they have been.

Then there was the death of the NYT reporter several months ago ~ I read something about that also this week, but can't find the link now.

Thanks for the links, Flyarm. I have a feeling justice has not been done for these people ~
