More than 30,000 people attend Germany's Easter peace marchesBERLIN : Around 30,000 people marched in Germany over the weekend in traditional Easter marches for pacifism, organisers said.
The "Ostermarsch" association, which organised the events, said Iran and the dispute over its nuclear programme was at the forefront of the minds of demonstrators who marched through 83 German towns this year.
A communique from the group described the demonstrations as being in some way the start of "a campaign against Washington's latest crazy war, against Iran this time".
The Easter pacifist marches started in Britain in the 1950s as part of the campaign for nuclear disarmament.
They reached a peak in West Germany in 1983, when 700,000 people demonstrated across the country against the deployment of United States Pershing II missiles on West German territory. - AFP /dt
