Would the USA be better off with coalition-style governance ?

The reason I ask this, is because there are really many political parties in this country, but most of them choose to live under the Democratic tent. We know what the Republicans are about. So it seems the Republicans get handed their edicts from on high and start marching, where we Democrats want to argue over the exact course of the war. Our approach is better long term, I think.

Back to my question: Would we better off with, say, 30 political parties that have to form alliances/coalitions to form governments ? My gut tells me no, but I'm not well informed on this.

we would be better off with many, many, many political parties if for no other reason than the focus of governance would once again become pragmatically focused on what works rather than centered around idealogical arguments and positions. The political factions already exist both within the democratic and republican parties and as various independent parties. I don't expect it to happen here anytime soon, however. Seems as a society we only understand black and white, winning and losing. We cannot contemplate much less embrace shades of grey. And compromise is largely understood as cowardice.
