Or are Bush and Rumsfeld so tightly linked, that letting Rumsfeld go would be, in the court of public opinion, admitting his own failure as a President?

Yes, getting rid of Rummy would be an admission of failure. But it'd be worse than that because it would end up in the press with a retrospective of the entire war, a replay of all those early visions of flowers and sunshine from every member of the administration, but especially Rummy and his buddy Dick. And in the end it wouldn't matter one whit because the new sec def would have to toe the same old tired line for his boss.

7. Unfortunately, Rumsfeld won't be dumped

if insulting the troops ("You go to war with the army you have...") and Abu Ghraib didn't do it, then he is there for the duration. As for *, if he can't testify (not under oath) without Cheney, then it probably isn't up to him to "dump Rumsfeld."

And they are floating Joe Lieberman's name as Rumsfeld's replacement as a kind of poison pill strategery.

to take out Rummy. That's the only way Bush can get sympathy and keep his 32% support for the war.

The two thousand BS Rummy spewed is not representative of those General Officers (approx two dozen) who worked right along side him in the Pentagon.

This bastard is going to feel more heat and either be forced to resign OR look at the Army getting a whole lot more TESTY. He will leave soon, I feel it in my gut. (My gut's usually right about 75-80% of the time :P).

12. Rummy knows all the angles that has virtually trashed the military

both body and soul (morale). Nothing but a positive can come from his resignation. Although his replacement can be as despicable with regard to his complete and utter disregard for the welfare of the troops, ANY replacement will not know how to do "as much damage" as this evil man has over his tenure as Secretary of Defense. He's pure evil and must go ... no, no one will be worse than him ... at least the General Officers could help slow down the damage.

Rumsfeld, Cheney.... These are the men really running the show. Bush has absolutely no power over them- he's a show pony. A far as I'm concerned the recent Rumsfeld bruhaha is fluff. The man is going nowhere, regardless of what the media reports.

And these people could care less about polls are public opinion. The have an agenda and they're sticking to it. The only way these people are going to be taking out of fice is if they're forced out. And I honestly don't know how it can be done...

15. This assumes Bush is the leader

rather than simply a hollow puppet front for a Cabal that Rumsfeld is a part of. I suspect the reason why Bush will have difficulty dumping Rummy is because Rummy is one of the people who tells Chimpy when to jump and how high.

Same reason Cheney wasn't dumped in 04 with his nightmarish approval numbers. The fringe players are disposable pawns but the core group all consider themselves above the law and above approval...they don't fall on swords, they have people to do that for them.
