VETS FOR PEACE OFFICE BURGLARIZED

MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA: This past weekend the office of Chapter 27 of the Veterans for Peace was broken into and burglarized. Sometime between Friday afternoon, 14 April 2006 and Monday morning, 17 April 2006, the office was surreptitiously entered and a number of items were removed. VFP #27 maintained an office in the basement of 2123 Clinton Ave. S. a property belonging to the Saint Stephen’s Catholic Community. According to reports none of the exterior doors of the former parochial school were forced open. The office door lock was broken by some sort of pry, possibly a screwdriver. John Varone, President of Chapter 27 was not immediately available for comment. Shiloh Fetzek, the Office Coordinator said that all the computers, the printers, the DVD player, the CD player and a small amount of cash were taken. Bob Heberle, the Chapter Secretary said that the greatest loss wasn’t the equipment, but the data it contained. “Years of records have be lost,” he said. “They can’t be replaced except by hours and hours of tedious data entry.” Fortunately, the paper records and the literature in the office appear not to have been of interest to the burglars. The police have no suspects at this time. But, they removed the Coffee Fund jar that had contained a small amount of cash in the hope of recovering finger prints.

3. What is it with all these break ins at peace and dem type orgs?
One might think Nixon were back in the White House, and left to run rampant after Watergate...

Oh, wait - it's Bush. He probably ordered the NSA to do illegal sneak and swipe operations on all these "terrorists".

6. They will find no prints.
A professional job made to look like a common burglary. The incidentals (printer, CD player, etc.) have already been dumped in the nearest river. The computers are being gone over for names that will appear on voter deletion and no-fly lists.

10. Haven't these people ever heard of backups?
You burn your essential files on CD and have someone take them home, offsite. You do incremental backups for anything new or changed. It might not hurt to use encryption as well.

Some things ought to be obvious.

15. Phew! I was worried we couldn't blame the victim for a second there
Thanks starroute; it's all the organization's fault for not keeping and maintaining a back-up archive. Practically an engraved invitation to have their offices broken into and their equipment stolen. Surprised the cops even took a report.

17. It seems like good general advice
plenty of people don't back-up their data and of course they should.

It won't get you your gear back but the data is really more important. I don't see criticizing the lack of back-up as an attack on the victims. It is not about avoiding the theft but rather how to recover quickly from ANY disruption (including mechanical failure).

18. its really quite logical
they are at fault in a miniscule way for not backing up. Data loss can be achieved through hacking, viruses or plain system failure. If we ever want to get ahead, we need to back the crap up... how sloppy are we??? Geez???? I remember the break in before the election in Toledo OH in 2004, not only did the thieves get the data, they kept the data from their owners.....

I'm sorry but its sloppy, I have heard too many stories from my boyfriend who deals with this....

14. This is how you discourage people from organizing and speaking up
Imagine belonging to a peaceful organization opposed to Bush and some right-wing fundamentalist sociopath gets a hold of your personal information including your name, address, and phone number (maybe even a credit card number).

Michelle Malkin posted phone numbers of students who protested Army recruiters on their campus on her website. Here is Keith Olberman's transcript:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12370975 /

"But the winner, Michelle Malkin—military recruiters showed up an on-campus job fair at the University of California at Santa Cruz, which was their right. Four students showed up and protested their presence, which was their right. Malkin blogged about it, which was her right.

But she also posted the names and home phone numbers of the protesting students, who, as a result, have been inundated with death threats. And she will not take the phone numbers down from her blog. And, if she thinks that is also her right, then, she is even crazier and dumber than we all thought.

Michelle Malkin, today‘s “Worst Person in the World.”

20. Was this the same place that was in the news a few months ago?
Edited on Tue Apr-18-06 05:17 PM by me b zola
There was, IIRC, a Vets for Peace office in Minneapolis directly next door to a military recruiter. The recruiters were upset because the vet in the office next door displayed in his window an updated body count of US GI's killed in Iraq.

I could be wrong about it being Veterans for Peace (although the guy in the office next door was a vet and a peace activist, of this I'm sure) and about it being in Minneapolis, but my memory is telling me that it could be.

Does anyone recall that story?
