Is it me, or is the gas price rise all staged?
Remember how furious people were last year when the price of gas spiked due to Katrina? This was right around Labor Day - late August & early September. However, by the end of September & early October, the price quickly retreated back to pre-Katrina levels. People were relieved and the media declared that happy days were here again - just in time for election day.

Are we going to see similar this year? Prices rising to even higher levels - $3.50 or more per gallon. Then, right when people start getting angry & upset at price gouging, the prices will quickly plummet back down to slightly below $3.00/gallon. People will feel relieved and the media will again declare that happy days are here again - just in time for election day.

Despite all the corruption, people often still vote their pocketbooks, and a temporary high from a gas price retreat may make a difference in a few close races.

Am I too much of a conspiracy theorist with a bunch of oil people in the White House?

1. I remember 1973 when gas jumped from 50 cents a gal to $1.00.
Opec told us of a shortage that was just a collusive effort to drive up the prices. It was all BULLSHIT!

2. Seems a bit early for that scenario --
but time will certainly tell, this fall.

Seems to me they're just seeing exactly how much Americans are willing to spend before they cut back on usage. Are people using less? I don't see evidence of that, yet.

Oil companies have gone mad with greed. COuld be that the whole Iran brouhaha is just about raising tensions in order to get more bucks...

6. Yes, wild with greed. That's why I don't like to see them get in on Pemex
(the nat'l oil company of Mexico).

3. Gas isn't even $3.00/gallon yet
and people are already angry. I don't think it will make any difference this time around, even assuming your conspiracy theory is true. Too late now.

5. I haven't noticed it as much
though, i do see lines as gas stations now, as nobody wants to wait until their tank is empty - waiting an extra day or two could mean you pay 10 cents a gallon more.

4. I don't think you've got a tinfoil hat.
I heard an analysis on NPR last night. The reason for the price increase is investor fear that something will happen in Iran. Nothing firm, nothing concrete has caused this price increase---just plain ol' panic.

I think you're right---Rove's probably got something to do with it so that the prices go back down just before the election. :grr:

8. People are going to get mad when they realize
that they can't afford to go on their summer vacations because Bush's oil buddies need more profit.

1000 driving miles @ 14 mpg @ $3.50 gallon = $250.00

9. I don't know what ultimate impact it had on prices ...

11. Global warming has ruined the skiing in Aspen so
the oil execs are all having to buy chalets in Whistler BC. Those babies aren't cheap - how else are they going to afford to buy them?

14. They're cheaper than Aspen
just harder to get to.

Whistler had a lovely 160 kph ice storm in February this year on the peak. An awesome thing two foot long peacock feathers made out of ice all over up there . . . parallel to the ground.

Two years ago SO and I got caught in a whiteout ridge squall for an endless hour on a stuck chairlift - worst in 40 years, with temps down to -40 and people flinging themselves from the chairs.

Whistler seems to be compensating for Aspen. Fat ass oil execs play golf, they don't ski. They hate Whistler because you actually have to ski your ass off, not swoosh down a bunny hill in your guccis and park your flab in the apres hut, exhausted.

12. No, it's not just you
I can see that scenario being played out. Not to mention that every major holiday sees a spike a few weeks before for some 'reason', then it drops back down some afterwards.

CT is easy with this bunch and using the term doesn't mean it isn't true.

I hope once Bush and his toxic sabre rattling is gone that gas prices will recede a bit... But I'm not holding my breath, especially given that we've got three more years to go.
