strong link between excessive drinking and mental illness

Bush is an admitted alcoholic -- who claims that he stopped drinking (cold turkey?). He is an untreated alcoholic. Randi Rhodes was interviewing the author of Bush on the couch. Bush is bat shit crazy -- and more than likely alcohol messed up his brain -- he has an alcoholic personality.

There is plenty of evidence to show that people who drink high volumes of alcohol are vulnerable to mental ill-health. Regular drinking is thought to change the chemistry of the brain and deplete the neurotransmitters it needs to prevent anxiety and depression naturally. According to the WHO, enough evidence exists to assume alcohol contributes to depression.

How many of us know the anxiety and low mood that can come on with an ordinary hangover? In fact while we're still drunk, we often experience amplification of feelings we might have been trying to numb. This is because alcohol depresses the central nervous system, removing inhibitions. And it is why so many people become aggressive, weepy or flirtatious after a few. A sobering additional finding cited in the report is that 70% of men who kill themselves have drunk alcohol before doing so.

Mounting evidence shows that millions are using alcohol to deal with mental and emotional problems, and that excessive drinking is in turn accelerating the increase of reported mental illness in the UK.

6. As an ex bartender, I often wondered if the mental illness came
first and triggered off the drinking or other substance abuse. I have known alcohol abusers who weren't alcoholics. They were more in party mode for part of their lives and then stopped for various reasons, like getting married and acquiring family responsibilities, or finding other ways to spend their time that didn't involve constant partying or drinking.

But there were those who were chronic drinkers whom you knew had a screw loose that the drinking seemed to magnify even though they probably thought they were feeling better. Most of these chronic drinkers had jobs and a certain amount of respectability. It takes a while to get down to where you have to hit the AA rock bottom to become sober.

I think our President has hit rock bottom and really needs an intervention.

8. I have bartender friends and some are better shrinks
then some shrinks I know who have degrees.

People often tell bartenders things they'd never tell a shrink. Plus bartenders have to be good observers.
