Well, that was a depressing NOVA on PBS....
Seems that Global Warming has been held back by particle emissions. In the 80s and 90s, developed nations cut back on particle emissions, only to greatly increase the effects of Global Warming.

Bottom line: we have ten years to decrease greenhouse gasses or else...

BTW: The particle emission now taking place in China kills 100,000,000 with lung diseases and may decrease the monsoons they rely on for drinking water. It is also thought that our particle emissions (pre-cleanup) caused the African droughts of the 70s and 80s. Burning fossil fuels is bad stuff.

1. Read Vanity Fair articles about environment...
It's dedicated to the environment, with several good articles, including...

an essay by Gore (not available online)

While Washington Slept - If global warming isn't halted, rising sea levels could submerge coastal cities by 2100. So how did this virtual certainty get labeled a "liberal hoax"?

(It's also got George Clooney B-) on the "green" cover...along with Gore, Robert Kennedy Jr., & Julia Roberts)

2. but but but
what the hell does this have to do with INCREASING CORPORATE PROFITS?

we as good consumers can't let a piddley thing like global warming erode the profit margins of major multi national corporations.

just get off your left wing high horse and let the free market take care of it, dammit!

6. Why not have the Dept of Ecological Restoration?
I mean the corporations could funnel most of the money but if at least 10% goes to actually trying to fix our planet then at least that is better then the zip we are doing now.

They are so neophobic they can't even see how they can make tons of profit off the environment.

12. Easy, the quick fix is to increase particulate emmissions.
Thereby delaying the effects of global warming, have to spend less on stack maintenance and profits go up.

14. Nuclear and Photo-Voltaic energy
Edited on Tue Apr-18-06 10:36 PM by BrightKnight
I would like to see more nuclear power plants built.

"Each uranium Pellet produces as much energy as... 1,780 pounds of coal; or 19,200 cubic feet of natural gas. There are more than 18,000,000 fuel pellets in each reactor."

-----------------------

Multi-kilowatt Photo-Voltaic systems are not that expensive and should be mandated on new construction.

4. Well, I heard on CBC a few weeks ago.....
Edited on Tue Apr-18-06 08:20 PM by CanuckAmok
An eminent scientist who has been studying the effects of global warming says that we are beyond the point of no return, and even a complete moritorium on carbon-dioxide emmissions would only marginally slow the inevitable.

He predicts we have 30-60 years left before the biosphere becomes unlivable for us.

I'm sorry I can't remember his name, and not posting his name or a link makes this sound like :tinfoilhat: territory, but he's a well-respected expert and seemed to know an awful lot about what he was talking about.

5. Our entire way of life is disastrous for the planet.
I think sometimes that the nation-state, unregulated free-market capitalism, and a consumer society model that is rapidly becoming the norm for the planet ultimately will combine to ruin our entire ecosystem. It's very sad.

9. Problem is that sustainable technology is not given the priority...
it needs.

You're right, unregulated free-market capitalism does not include the costs to the common environment.

7. The really depressing part
Destroy all those scientific papers and years of data. What we don't know doesn't exist. There is no problem. There is no global warming. There is no global dimming.

Most of us learned by the time we were five that closing your eyes and putting your hands over your ears didn't have any impact on the snakes ... or tornadoes ... or whatever monsters we had at that age.

Guess our current administration never got beyond the toddler stage. And their best advice is to close our own eyes and join them.

At least Nova hasn't been canceled ... yet.

11. Mother Nature has been taking it in the eye for a some time now
This old planet has been around for close on to 4,000,000,000 years now, and has gotten on fine during that time, with the exception of her newest 'problem child', MAN. We have been around for maybe a million years, and have been causing her nothing but trouble, and lately WE have become quite a NUISCANCE, to both the Earth as well as OURSELVES.
For all this, mankind may well eradicate himself/herself!! Were this to happen I think Ol' Mama Nature would breathe quite a sigh of relief . Remember the old saying
IT'S NOT NICE TO FOOL WITH MOTHER NATURE!!!!!!!:nuke:

I don't see any other Democrat capable of getting elected who would and could do as much as Gore...
