2 MORE Katrina victims found....State ME estimates 400 unaccounted for
Good thing the "official death count" ended, what, September 10 or so?

=====
Cadaver dogs led recovery crews to remains of two bodies this week buried in rubble in the 9th Ward of New Orleans. So far, 11 bodies have been found in this devastated neighborhood. It marks the first time since March 25th, that teams found human remains.

Current plans have the search wrapping up the search for bodies in the Lower 9th, on May 28th...even though the State Medical Examiner has said, he expects there are as many as 400 bodies unaccounted for.

1. That's horrible. I can't even imagine how badly decomposed they were.
That article says 727 still missing. How long does one need to be missing before declared legally dead? 1 year? They're not going to find all of the bodies, especially after all this time. Some were just washed out to sea I'm sure.

2. "splinters of 1700 homes to be checked"
"There are still splinters of 1700 homes to be checked before the May 28th deadline."

Not the retriever cadaver dog, but a shepherd one, March 31ish, 2006, Lower 9th.

3. It is disgusting
and the way in which our government handled this crisis will remain an outrage in the minds of many Americans for years. I cannot forget watching the nonstop coverage from the local stations in New Orleans (which had relocated to Baton Rouge and Jackson, Mississippi) and the horrible, horrible views of people stranded on rooftops day after day after day . . .and the rightwing pundits taking disgraceful potshots at these people as "choosing" to remain there (as if they could walk 200 miles out of the path of the damned storm along crowded highways). As many mistakes as the city of New Orleans (and other Gulf Coast cities) made, as the state of Louisiana made, it was obvious to EVERY American within a few hours of this hurricane's passing that there was no way these states and localities could handle the magnitude of this disaster.

Even in the most limited federal governmental system, Americans expect a government which exists by the power and the monies provided by the American people to aid and rescue American citizens using every resource possible - and immediately. Our government failed - except the rescue teams of the Louisiana Fish and Wildlife groups and the amazing members of the United States Coast Guard. Americans were utterly ashamed of their government while Republicans gloated and brooded over offers of assistance from over 100 countries, including military rescue help from tiny nations like El Salvador. Our governments response was an utter embarassment to the American people. . .and Republicans laughed and spinned the story rather than have the patriotic spine to take responsibility for their utter and willful incompetence.

It just floors me today that Americans are still the primary volunteers who are helping the Gulf Coast very slowly rebuild and our national agencies designed to handle an emergency continue their pattern of incompetence. And where is all the money people and other countries donated? The over $1 billion that individual Americans poured out during the very first couple of weeks, the $2 billion that the people of Kuwait contributed. . .and the funds and assistance offered by so many, many other countries? Has our government even had the decency and grace to send "thank yous" to those nations? Has our Congress even thought of taking an hour away from passing legislation for conservative televangelists to issue a proclamation of thanks to the other countries of the world who came to our aid? Has our ambassador to the U.N. used his platform to issue a thank you before all the representatives in the world?

There is something else that bothers me about this - the people of the Gulf will be cleaning up for years and so many trying to rebuild their lives. I have thought for a long time that in August, which I believe is the anniversary of the United States Coast Guard, that our government should sponsor something special in honor of the rescue work they did during the hurricane season - and their other work. The Coast Guard is so often overlooked when we honor the military, and yet (without slamming other military branches) they probably engage in rescue and lifesaving work more than any other military agency on a constant daily basis. I would like to see our Congress issue a proclamation honoring them on that day - and to see something scheduled in those many small Coast Guard offices around the country. There are MANY of them. And this suggestion isn't to belittle any of the other people who have helped with Katrina at all - frankly, I expect that New Orleans, when it is more on its feet, will honor all those people with a Mardi Gras or something. But I really would like to see the rest of this country do something as well.

Do any of you think this might be a feasible idea?
