The Convenant With Black America Makes History
The Convenant With Black America has officially made history!

The Convenant will occupy the Number 1 slot on the New York Times Bestseller List on April 23.

It is the first non-fictional work published by an African-American company, to reach and top the NY Times Bestseller List.

And as Tavis Smiley (who edited the book)commented on the Tom Joyner Morning Show, this isn't just a victory for one person.

This is a victory for Black America as a whole. With the success of The Covenant, we have brought issues of concern in the African-American community, right into the forefront of America, when past practice has been that our issues were the last to be addressed, if they were addressed at all.

So congratulations to Tavis Smiley and all who contributed to The Covenant. But most importantly, congratulations to all of Black America. There is a movement happening. We are more determined that ever to make Black America better. And when we do that, we make all of America better.

8. The Convenant....
Just on background:

Every year for about the last 7 or 8 years now, Tavis Smiley hosts what he calls the State of the Black Union.

Each February, Tavis gathers some of the opinion-makers, educators, leaders, ministers, etc in the African-American community, for a dialogue on how we can make Black America better.

And one of the ideas that was born out of the 2005 State of the Black Union, was this concept of a Covenant With Black America.

So, after the 2005 State of the Black Union, Tavis and others began working on the Covenant With Black America.

It's basically our way of taking responsibility for ensuring that issues of concern in our community are addressed. Because past practice has been that our issues are always the last to be addressed, if they are addressed at all.

Anyway, you can read up more on it at the following website: http://covenantwithblackamerica.com/why.html

I'm sure they will articulate it for you better than I ever could, lol!

7. I watched the day-long program that introduced this concept on C-Span
several weeks ago and was delighted with the idea.

I, too, must get the book and also sign on with core group as I hope that many others will do.

Thanks for posting this...

BTW...a small but active group of Harlem-based African American Grandmas marched against the Iraq war yesterday. They got a mention in only one of NYC newspapers, but I thought I would pass on the infor so that people know that there is activism going on in the neighborhoods.
